Call for Papers: Queer Desire and India (Other Indias Conference)

Call for Papers: Queer Desire and India (Other Indias Conference)
Deadline: 30 July 2011

As you may already know, the Spanish Association for Interdisciplinary India Studies (AEEII) holds its II International Conference with the title “Other Indias: The Richness of Indian Multiplicity” at University of La Laguna (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain) on 23-26 November, 2011.

The organizers welcome panels from a variety of fields, and we would like to propose one on “Queer Desire & India.” Given the fact that the colonial Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was finally read down by the High Court of Delhi in 2009, the issue of the construction of a queer culture in India needs urgent attention.

We request proposals that deal with the study of sexual identity in India and its diaspora in general and with any topic pertaining to the below concerns:

- the context of (post)colonial heteronormativity in contrast to pre-colonial constructions.

- the cultural, material and ideological arrangements of everyday gay life in India.

- the influence, if any, of western feminist/queer activists and academic critics.

- same-sex desire portrayed in literature and films.

- civil movements against former Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.

- the invisibility of the lesbian experience.

- studies on creative writers, such as Hanif Kureishi, Kamala Das, Manju Kapur, Hoshang Merchant, Shyam Selvadurai, Raj R. Rao, Suniti Namjoshi, etc.

- the homoerotics and sensationalism.

- debates around “indianness”; the intersections between the dissident and nationalist discourses.

We also invite contributors to participate in a round table about “Queer Desire & India” by the end of the panel session.

Please, send us an abstract of around 200 words and a short bio-note (including affiliation of author and e-mail) to antonia.navarro@uco.es by July 30, 2011.

Final papers should not exceed 10 pages (2,500-3,000 words; 20 minutes’ delivery) and they can be presented either in English or Spanish. A peer-reviewed selection of the conference papers (in the English version) will be considered for publication under the format of a book.
