Call for Submissions: The Wanderlust Review Asia Issue
Deadline: 1 August 2011

For thousands of years, the continent of Asia has stoked the imaginations of those at home and abroad. Whether through the ethereal paintings of Hiroshige, the writing of Murakami, or the revolutionary martial arts films of Hong Kong, this continent of billions has inspired generations from every corner of the globe. As travelers, we see the spirit of this continent in its temples and statues, forests and jungles, efficient modern megacities and ornate villages untouched by time. And most all, in its people.

Call for Submissions

For the second print and electronic issue of The Wanderlust Review, we want to pay homage to the great continent of Asia. Beginning June 1, 2011, we will start accepting submissions of non-fiction and fiction prose, poetry, drama, photography and art inspired by Asia and the Asian Diaspora for our Fall 2011 issue.

Through Our Partnership with Mercy Corps, Proceeds Benefit Sendai Earthquake Survivors

We are also very proud to announce that through our partnership with Mercy Corps, 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the ASIA Issue will benefit those affected by the March 11th 9.0-magnitude Sendai earthquake, the subsequent tsunami, and the on-going nuclear emergency. Partnering with Peace Winds, Mercy Corps has responded to this tragedy by providing food, water and shelter to those most in need. Mercy Corps is also taking steps to make their Comfort for Kids signature program available in Japan. Comfort for Kids has provided post-trauma assistance to children and caregivers in settings as diverse as New York City after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the Sichuan Province of China after 2008’s powerful earthquake, and most recently in the Haitian earthquake zone.

It is our sincerest hope that through the art that has been inspired by this beautiful and diverse region of the world, we can do our part to give back in this time of need.

Submission Guidelines

PLEASE READ this entire page before submitting your work to us. Failure to do so will result in your piece not being considered for publication and you will not receive a response.

We only accept work submitted during our Submission Periods. For the ASIA Issue, we will begin accepting work for consideration on June 1, 2011 and will continue to accept work until the end of the day on August 1, 2011. Any work submitted outside of that window will not be considered for publication or receive a response.

ASIA Issue: The ASIA Issue is a themed issue and will only publish work related to the continent of Asia or the Asian Diaspora. These are rather general guidelines, as we are hesitant to hinder any work that might blur the edges of this stipulation. If you are unsure if your piece is a good fit for this particular issue, we encourage you to submit. Worse case scenerio, we’ll feel that your piece isn’t right for the issue.

General Guidelines: All pieces should be sent as attachments (.doc file or .rtf file for text, .jpg or .png for photography and artwork). In the body of your e-mail, please include a brief description of yourself (three sentences or less, which includes your name, location, and previous publications [if any]) that will be included with your piece if published. Any piece containing egregious grammatical errors or spelling mistakes will not be considered, so please proofread your work before submitting. We encourage you to take the time to browse through our older issues and get a good feel for what we are about and what we are looking to publish. We are happy to accept older work or new work written expressly for The Wanderlust Review. However, we do not accept previously published work.

Send all submissions to wanderlustreview@gmail.com. The subject of your e-mail must read as follows: GENRE – Title – Last Name

Examples:

NON-FICTION – Orchid Fever – Orlean

FICTION – Tale of Two Cities – Dickens

DRAMA – Glengarry Glen Ross – Mamet

POETRY – Howl – Ginsberg

PHOTO – Rose and Driftwood – Adams

ARTWORK – Portrait of Suzanne Bloch – Picasso

Non-Fiction: We accept non-fiction essays (3,000 words or less) written in a journalistic or literary nonfiction style. Non-Fiction should adhere to the general thematic guideline of travel or journeying.

Fiction: We accept high-quality short stories or excerpts from longer manuscripts that can stand alone with literary integrity (3,000 words or less). There are no specific style guidelines, but travel, either tangible or intangible, should be the predominant theme in your prose piece.

Drama: We accept high-quality dramatic pieces or excerpts from longer manuscripts that can stand alone with literary integrity (1o pages or less). There are no specific style guidelines, but travel, either tangible or intangible, should be the predominant theme in your dramatic piece.

Poetry: You may submit up to three poems. We prefer free verse, but welcome form poems if they are well executed and adhere to the general thematic guideline of travel. We tend not to publish poems with rhyming patterns, though near rhymes and witty or affecting rhymes within free verse poems are acceptable. We are looking for poems that use descriptive language to evince fresh and original imagery. If your poem uses non-traditional formatting or pagination, we will try our best to preserve this while formatting it for the journal, but if we’re unable to, we will contact you to see if you would still like it to be published.

Photography: For stand-alone images, we accept one piece at a time. In the body of your email, please include a 1-3 sentence caption describing or explaining your piece. Photos must be black and white for consideration in our print journal. Color photos will only be considered for publication online.

Artwork: We invite color or black and white artwork submissions for inclusion in the journal and will also consider each piece for our cover (front and/or back). Artwork may be abstract or open to interpretation, but please also be mindful of our travel theme when submitting.
