Part-time Website Managing Editor Wanted for the Asian American Writers' Workshop
The Asian American Writers' Workshop is looking to hire a highly ambitious entrepreneur who wants to build editorial and new media experience with the literary nonprofit that partied with Das Racist and Tao Lin, curated the Asian American ComiCon, and enlisted Salman Rushdie, Naomi Klein and 300 other writers to boycott Arizona and its crackdown on immigrants.

OUR VISION

We are inventing the online Asian American literary culture of tomorrow. We're launching an online magazine that's as accessible as Slate, as cool as Bidoun, more thrilling than the average literary journal or progressive magazine. We'll feature some of the finest writers in America in a unique, provocative format designed to lure in people who don't think political or ethnic literature is meant for them. We've already assembled a dream team of advisors, put together an editorial guide, and mocked up a new design. We have a vision we want you to implement, but you'll need to bring some vision of your own too.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The WEBSITE MANAGING EDITOR will lead a dramatic restructuring of the Workshop website into an online cultural magazine and journal, blogging platform, and content provider. This is what you'll do:

* Build and implement a vision of the premier Asian American online cultural center in close collaboration with the AAWW Executive Director, Program Director and board. You will report to the Executive Director.

* Pitch, write, assign and edit story ideas concerning the literary, political, and pop cultural life of 12% of NY and two-thirds of the world, from book reviews to Asian American activism to transnational politics. You will work with and manage a broad network of writers and editorial teams.

* Serve as the editorial coordinator for two virtual campaigns: Wordstrike: Writers Against SB1070 and Open City: Blogging Urban Change.

* Help coordinate two new ebook lines curated by Whiting Award winner Alexander Chee and Atlantic Monthly blogger Hua Hsu.

* More long-term projects if this position becomes full-time include coordinating podcasting and video for Workshop programming, coordinate web content with fundraising (e.g., online member drives, product sales, etc.), coordinating social media platforms and user interaction to promote engagement with the new website, and helping create a distribution and marketing stream for oral histories that'll humanize the experiences of people in places as diverse as Chinatown, Arizona, and Kashmir.

Yes, it's insane. We know. But you'll get volunteers and interns and we won't do it all at once. And it helps that you're brilliant, dynamic, and hard-working.

* You are an entrepreneur who can implement and add to our vision for what this awesome project can be.

* You are an awesome writer and editor with at least 2 years of editorial experience.

* You've worked with web content management systems, social media, AV programs. We're working with a designer and programmer to create a content management system, but we'd like you to know some html.

* You are familiar with contemporary literary trends and Asian American culture.

* You can manage and juggle several projects. You can create and execute your own plan from the ground-up.

* You've always wanted a job that's all extracurriculars, no homework. The work is fast-paced and relentless, but if you're the right person, you'll find it fun and rewarding—and you'll thrive.

What you should do next This is a part-time position with benefits and the possibility of full-time. Salary dependent on experience. This position comes with benefits.
