Call for Submissions for the Book "Pho for Life: a Melting Pot of Thoughts" (Asia-wide)
Deadline: 1 June 2011

From our friend Mai Xuan Bui of 13minutesmag.com: I am working on a book project that is scheduled to release late this year. And because 13 Minutes will handle the layout, it will be beautiful, elegant, heartfelt, and BIG. Our first book will be about 180-page long. The main purpose - besides the obvious reason - is to promote Asians to write. All I need for the writers to do is to write it from the heart and our Editors will take care of the rest. I hope that you may contribute a column, or a poem. There will be a book-signing party late this year. It's going to be a blast. Each column is between 600 and 1500 words. You can even write a poem if you like or you can do both. The first draft is due by June 1st.

Overall Theme

To take the reader on a journey to experience the many facets of love through personal relationships, in the context of Asian cultures.

Topics

The topics below can weave in various aspects of Asian cultures, such as food, customs/traditions, language, folklore, historical events, clothing/arts, and special places.

1. Longing to love and be loved

This topic explores the universal desire to love and be loved.

2. What does love mean to me?

This topic describes what love means to each person but also begins to suggest the notion of genuine/true love - of helping oneself and/or another to grow/become better.

3. Love without condition?

This topic explores unconditional love - an idea that is often known, but how often and where is it experienced in the context of relationships?

4. Love and my life's dream

This topic explores the big question "What is my purpose in life?" building upon the experience of unconditional love - that there is a unique purpose for each of us based on knowing that our greatest happiness lies in becoming fully who we are meant to be - just the way we are.

5. Love and its imitations

This topic explores love and its many imitations - is love simply just a feeling? - or perhaps something more? (the idea that love is a choice)

6. Love and justice

This topic explores how we can bring about justice in our world through love - on a larger scale of society or even among our own relationships. For ex, this quote comes to mind "There is no love without forgiveness and no forgiveness without love."

7. One love, many expressions

This topic brings the other topics together in explaining that love comes in many forms (among the Greeks, there are agape, filia, and eros, for example). That we can experience love throughout every aspect of our lives, even in the midst of our daily activities.

Please aim to explore Asia’s culture in your publication through one of these six categories, within one of the 7 topics listed above:

_____ Food

_____ Customs/traditions

_____ Language

_____ Folk tales

_____ Clothing/arts

_____ Places
