Two nationally acclaimed poets will give readings and craft workshops as part of Morehead State University’s fourth annual Creative Writing Symposium on Thursday and Friday, April 14 and 15.
Aracelis Girmay and Patrick Rosal, who both currently live in New York, will read excerpts from their work at 7 p.m., Thursday in 002 Breckinridge Hall, followed by a reception and book signing. Friday's event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 222 Rader Hall.
Girmay writes poetry, fiction and essays. Her collage-based picture book, changing, changing, was published by George Braziller in 2007. She is on the faculty of Drew University’s low residency M.F.A. program and Hampshire College’s Interdisciplinary Arts School. Her new collection of poems, Kingdom Animalia, will be published by BOA Editions in Fall 2011. She is a recent National Endowment for the Arts fellow and was featured in April’s issue of O Magazine.
Rosal is the author of three full-length poetry collections, Boneshepherds (forthcoming), My American Kundiman (2006), and Uprock Headspin Scramble and Dive (2003). His collections have been honored with the Association of Asian American Studies Book Award, Global Filipino Literary Award and the Asian American Writers Workshop Member’s Choice Award. In 2009, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to travel to the Philippines. He is currently on the faculty of Rutgers University-Camden’s M.F.A. program.
MSU’s Reading Series is sponsored by the B.F.A. degree in Creative Writing Program, the Department of English, MSU’s Arts and Humanities Council, Caudill College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Kentucky Folk Art Center, Multicultural Student Services, International and Interdisciplinary Studies, University Bookstore, Morehead State Public Radio and the the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
