East West Players is pleased to announce its latest Playwrighting Competition: FACE OF THE FUTURE. This time around we are particularly looking for plays that explore the reality of multicultural America from an Asian American perspective. For instance, subject matter might include (but need not be limited to) biracial or multiracial identity, clashes or collaborations between cultures, or international/transnational storylines.

The prizes are as follows: $5000 First Place; $2500 Second Place; $1000 Third Place. The First, Second and Third Place winners will all receive readings by EWP. All winners will be considered for workshop and/or production; EWP must have the first option to produce.

Submission period: May 2, 2011 to August 31, 2011

Notification: February 2012

FACE OF THE FUTURE: A Playwriting Competition at East West Players

Type of material: Full-length plays and musicals. If submitting a musical, please enclose a musical sample. No translations or adaptations. All submissions must be professionally unproduced, with no attachments.

Remuneration: $5000 First Place; $2500 Second Place; $1000 Third Place. The First, Second and Third Place winners will all receive readings by EWP. All winners will be considered for workshop and/or production; EWP must have the first option to produce.

Philosophical/Technical Guidelines: Looking particularly for plays that explore the reality of multicultural America from an Asian American perspective. For instance, subject matter might include (but need not be limited to) biracial or multiracial identity, clashes or collaborations between cultures, or international/transnational storylines. Must be accessible to a primarily English-speaking audience. Plays should require no more than 5-7 actors. Musicals should require no more than 10-12 actors. The story should be told in less than 2.5 hours including a 15 minute intermission.

Procedure: Title pages will be separated from the scripts and both will receive a tracking number. Blind entries will be screened by a committee of readers. Top scripts will be judged by a panel of distinguished artists. Previous judges have included Philip Kan Gotanda, David Henry Hwang, Wakako Yamauchi, and Julia Cho. We will announce the winners by press release in February 2012; participants will be notified by mail at the same time.

East West Players produces outstanding works and educational programs that give voice to the Asian Pacific American experience.
