About the Award
The Cultural Medallion was instituted in 1979 as an initiative of our late President, Mr Ong Teng Cheong, to give recognition to individuals who have attained artistic excellence and have made a distinction to our nation's arts and culture. It is conferred by the President, Republic of Singapore and is administered by the National Arts Council.
Prize
Recipients of the Award will receive a medallion, a lapel pin and a certificate.
Each recipient is also eligible for the Cultural Medallion Grant to undertake an arts project. The Cultural Medallion Grant is awarded only once in an artist's lifetime. The grant quantum will not exceed $80,000 for each applicant. However, a funding of up to a maximum of $200,000 will be allocated for collaborative projects involving two or more Cultural Medallion recipients.
Eligibility
All nominees must be Singapore citizens or permanent residents of Singapore.
Selection Criteria
The selection criteria are as follows:
1. Candidate should be recognised for his/her artistic work and contribution to the artistic development of Singapore.
2. Candidate should have attained artistic excellence.
3. Candidate should demonstrate, through a body of works pursued through a number of years, creative originality, professional maturity and artistic leadership in one or more disciplines as specified in the scope of the award.
4. Candidate should have established his / her name internationally, or won international awards.
5. Candidate should be involved in educational or community development projects towards the promotion of the respective art form.
6. Candidate should be an inspiration and role model to other artists in the arts community.
Assessment Procedure
The National Arts Council may, at its discretion, make additional nominations and/or defer or reject any nomination received from the public, and shall not be bound to give any reason for doing so.
The nominations supported by the National Arts Council will be submitted for further assessment to Specialist Panels, comprising persons established in the various artistic fields, appointed by the National Arts Council.
The Arts Award Ceremony will be held in November 2011.
