The management and officials of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage and Abu Dhabi International Book Fair 2011 were honoured to welcome His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidental Affairs; to officially inaugurate the Middle East’s most trusted book fair on March 15th on the occasion of its 21st anniversary.
His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan spent over an hour at the Fair meeting and talking with publishing industry exhibitors from all over the world, including spending time at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque stand.
Joining His Highness on a tour of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair were His Excellency Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, His Excellency Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage , and His Excellency Jumaa Al Qubaisi, Deputy Director General of the National Library and Director of Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.
His Excellency Jumaa Abdulla Al Qubaisi, Deputy Director General of the National Library and Director of Abu Dhabi International Book Fair said: “We are honoured that His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan was able to join us at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair this year. The event is a melting-pot of global publishers and it is an important crossroads at which book industry professionals from around the world can do business with the Arab community.”
With every year that passes, the number of international publishing houses who participate in the Fair increases. This year 875 publishing houses from 58 countries are taking part. And - over half a million titles are on display.
545 publishing houses from 17 Arab countries will be doing business with 330 publishing houses from 41 other foreign countries during the six-day event.
Arab publishing professionals will have access to their award-winning and best-selling contemporaries from Korea as the country comes under the spotlight as this year’s market focus.
This year’s cultural focus falls on France and throughout tomorrow, Tuesday 16 March, visitors to the Fair will be able to attend “A Day in France” comprising of a variety of activities dedicated to the subject. They include panel discussions with key French cultural figures and interesting talks with celebrated authors and key book industry professionals.
Like the four corners of the globe the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, which envelopes over 21,741 square metres of space within the Abu Dhabi International Exhibition Centre, has assigned special areas to four distinct subjects. There is the Youth’s Creativity Corner with 25 events and 41 participants and the E-publishing Corner which comprises five exhibitors and offers 7 events. The Cooking Corner features 12 events from 13 chefs (including several Ambassadors to the UAE) and in the Book Signing Corner there will be 40 ceremonies involving 50 authors.
