Asian Language Essay Competition For Year 8 and 9 Victorian School Students
The University of Melbourneʼs Asia Institute together with the Asia Education Foundation would
like to invite all Victorian Year 8 and 9 secondary school students to be involved in its annual Asian Language Essay Competition. The objective of the competition is to enable students to develop a better understanding of Asian languages and cultures, and to inspire them to continue to develop their Asia literacy.
ESSAY TOPIC
“Asia skills give you the edge. What future does Australia have if we only speak English?”
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Entrants are required to write an essay of between 700 and 1000 words (maximum) on the topic provided above and submit it under one of the following categories:
o Arabic
o Chinese
o Indonesian or
o Japanese
WINNERS & PRIZES
There will be one winner chosen for each category. Winnersʼ names and essays will be published
on the websites of both the Asia Institute and the Asia Education Foundation, and an awards
ceremony will be held at the University of Melbourne to formally acknowledge the achievements of the winners. Each winner will be presented with a prize to the value of $300 and a signed
certificate of achievement.
CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
1. The closing date for entries is 5pm, Friday 27 May 2011. Essays must be sent as doublespaced
Microsoft Word documents to renelson@unimelb.edu.au before this time. All entries
must include a cover sheet which includes the following:
o Entrantʼs full name, address and email address
o Entrantʼs school name, address, and contact telephone number
o The exact word count
o Essay category entered (ie. Arabic, Chinese, Indonesian or Japanese)
2. All entries must be worded in English, although brief reference to words and/or phrases in the
relevant Asian language is permitted.
3. Winners will be personally contacted during June 2011.
4. A representative panel of senior academic staff from the Asia Institute will judge entries.
