2011 ESSAY CONTEST FOR TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
The Tagore Society of Houston, a non profit 501-C3 organization, invites 2011 Texas High School Seniors to its annual essay contest focused on the philosophy and works of the great Indian Nobel Laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore. This year’s contest is especially important as it commemorates the 150th Birth Anniversary of Tagore.
How to Apply:
Contestants will review a famous quote from Tagore and write an essay based on its relevance to current times and how it can help today’s society. The primary objective of this contest is to promote “borderless thinking” and the enduring insights from one of the world’s greatest poets as our seniors step out onto their own world stage.
The Essay Topic and submission instructions are attached or can be downloaded from

Submission Deadline is April 24, 2011, 12 midnight. All submissions will be on-line through the website. Winners will be notified latest by May 22, 2011. The Award ceremony date, place and time will be announced later.
Prize Value:
Three prizes will be awarded in the following amounts: $1,000 for the best submission, and two runner up prizes worth $500 each. All 3 winners will be given Certificates of Achievement.
Eligibility:
· High school seniors of good standing currently attending school in the United States
· Children/Relatives of Tagore Society of Houston Executive body and Advisors are NOT eligible to apply.
· Scholarships are conditional upon the full-time enrollment of the winner in an accredited U.S. college or university

Essay Topic and Instructions
Rabindranath Tagore was a prodigious Poet, Playwright, Essayist, and Philosopher, who in 1913 became the first Asian winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature based on a book of poems called the “Gitanjali”. During his life time he traveled to all continents promoting the ideal of a world without borders, life dedicated to service and unity of all existence. This year marks the 150th birth anniversary of the Tagore, an event being celebrated world wide in many countries. One of his more famous quotes is given below:
“The tendency in modern civilization is to make the world uniform… Let the mind be universal. The individual should not be sacrificed.”
Review the above quote and write in 1000 words or less an essay based on its relevance to current times, what it may mean to you personally, and how it can help today’s society. Participants are strongly encouraged to refer to Tagore’s works for reference. The Essays however will be judged primarily on creativity, focus and language skills.
The deadline for submission is Midnight April 24, 2011.

The essays must be typed using common word processing or text editing software such as MS Word and submitted as an e-mail attached file to essaycontest@tagoresociety.org.
