A Danish-sponsored journalism contest will promote an understanding of how hemophilia affects patients and families, offering $6,000 in prize money to the best local reporting on the subject.
Two $3,000 prizes will be awarded, one for print media and one for broadcast media, as part of the initiative. The contest is to create awareness about this very, very difficult disease, and to increase public knowledge of hemophilia and its medical and social implications. Hemophilia is a hereditary disease resulting in a rare anomaly of blood coagulation, which means blood fails to clot properly. It can lead to internal bleeding, organ damage, a variety of physical problems, and even death.
The international pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk is organizing the journalism contest for the second year, after the previous edition focused on raising awareness about the vital role of early and comprehensive care for hemophilia patients.
