Job Description

Science Writer/Editor & Project Manager – Macmillan Scientific Communications

Macmillan Scientific Communications (MSC) is the scientific custom publishing division of Macmillan Publishers Ltd. MSC works with clients in top universities and research institutes around the world to provide tailor-made packages in scientific communications that highlight the institution’s achievements in research to the world. The projects include websites, print publications, podcasts and online videos both in English and local languages.

Macmillan Publishers Ltd. is the owner of Nature Publishing Group (NPG), publisher of the international science journal Nature, Scientific American, and a family of Nature-branded research journals. MSC has exclusive access to the editorial and production expertise of NPG (including Scientific American) in print, online and audio-visual media and thus is able to design and create content with the highest editorial and production standards.

MSC is currently seeking to employ a Science Writer/Editor and Project Manager to augment the capabilities of its Asia-Pacific division following recent rapid expansion of business in the region. The ideal candidate will have at least an undergraduate degree, preferably in a science-related discipline, and will be able to write and/or edit a wide range of journalistic articles on science and technology in English and/or Japanese (contingent on the Japanese and English language ability of the candidate) for MSC projects. These will include feature articles, profiles of researchers and research centres, interviews, articles on innovations in technology as well as press releases and other types of content as required. In addition, the successful candidate may be required to supply written content for other projects within NPG such as advertorials and regional supplements for advertising. The ability to write and edit technical scientific research highlights (short, easy-to-understand summaries of technical research articles) would be an added asset.

Furthermore, the unique multi-faceted work environment of MSC means that whilst the main focus of the successful candidate’s tasks will be science writing and/or editing, the successful applicant will also be required on occasion to project manage some or all aspects of MSC projects. This may involve the commissioning and editing of articles from, and management of, other writers or more general project management of MSC projects as required.

As many of MSC’s clients are international-level institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, in particular Japan, language skills will be crucial for the position. The ideal applicant will have strong skills in English and Japanese, and will likely be a native speaker of English with excellent written and spoken Japanese, or a native Japanese speaker with a high level of written and spoken English. The position also requires a sound knowledge of Japanese business practices and culture and an ability to communicate effectively with senior figures in large Japanese government institutions.

This role is key to the expansion of MSC in the Asia-Pacific and is a demanding and varied position which is intellectually stimulating and challenging. In addition to writing and editing abilities, the successful candidate will be a flexible, dynamic and resourceful self-starter with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. The salary and benefits will be competitive, reflecting the importance and responsibilities of this position.

The position will be based at the Asia-Pacific regional headquarters of Macmillan Scientific Communications in Tokyo, Japan.

Applicants should send a CV (including the discipline of degree), three examples of recently published articles, and a brief cover letter explaining their interest in, and suitability for, the post along with their salary expectations.
