Deadline: 11 April 2011
BusinessWorld Publishing Corporation
BusinessWorld, the country’s leading business newspaper, represents three decades of professional economic journalism. This tradition of excellence began when Business Day, the forerunner of BusinessWorld, first came off the press on February 27, 1967. It was Southeast Asia’s first business daily. In its maiden issue, Business Day pledged competent and responsible reporting of the news. The paper expanded its operations in the years that followed to keep in step with the growing business community. At least twice in its history, the paper was able to withstand forces both within and outside the company. First, the martial law years failed to stop its presses. Second, the concept of professional economic journalism refused to die even as labor problem forced the company to close shop on June 5, 1987. The non-striking workers got together barely a month later to form BusinessWorld Publishing Corporation, ushering in the paper’s rebirth under a new name: BusinessWorld. Unlike its predecessor, BusinessWorld had to compete with other business dailies and several mass-circulation papers with expanded business sections. BusinessWorld managed to position itself in the overcrowded industry, as indeed, not all business papers are created equal. Over the years, BusinessWorld has exhibited remarkable growth. Today, it comes out Monday through Friday with national and foreign circulation. A readership survey conducted by an independent research group revealed that subscribers pass their copies on to an average of five other persons. Its subscribers are trendsetters and decision makers – leaders in business, industry and government. In 1991, BusinessWorld Publishing Corporation incorporated World Press, Inc., a wholly owned printing subsidiary. In 1994, it moved to its new home in Quezon City and embarked on its innovative library computerization program. The paper also introduced new sections on the same year to meet the market’s rapidly changing needs. In 1995, it launched its Online Edition on the World Wide Web to meet the market’s rapidly changing needs. And of course, there are the other BusinessWorld publications such as the monthly BusinessWorld Files, the annual BusinessWorld Top 1000 Corporations in the Philippines and the BusinessWorld Special Anniversary Reports. BusinessWorld’s success over the years was made possible by a firm belief that a newspaper is a public trust.
