The National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore invites applications for the position of Department Chair of English Language and Literature. We are seeking an individual with strong leadership skills, an established research program, and a professional ethos consistent with NIE's vision to be a leading teacher education institute internationally, who will build on the department’s record of excellence in teaching and scholarship in research.

The English Language and Literature (ELL) department focuses on research and teacher education in the areas of English Language, Applied Linguistics, Educational Linguistics, Literacy and Literature. We pride ourselves in having a research culture that embraces diversity and multidisciplinary perspectives, as well as a strong focus on balancing research with maintaining excellence in our teaching and pedagogy. ELL has both academic and pedagogy commitments and offers undergraduate and graduate programs as well as pre-service and in-service teacher certification courses. Research oriented graduate work is also offered for the Master of Arts, Master of Education and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. The department also runs a 1-year Postgraduate Diploma in English Language Teaching program for scholars from China.

The Head, ELL has overall responsibility for managing the teaching and research commitments of the department and works in collaboration with NIE’s program offices to ensure the quality of the academic programs. The Head also works closely with the research offices of NIE in attaining the research goals of the Institute. The Head’s responsibilities in academic leadership also encompasses strategic planning, faculty recruitment, development and evaluation, as well as the management of departmental resources. The Head’s role extends beyond NIE, and includes representing the department at the University, national and international levels. In addition, the Head may be asked to serve as a representative of NIE at the Ministry of Education, Singapore, in the areas of English language education policies and teacher education.

Requirements

This is a full-time faculty position at the Associate Professor or Professor level. Remuneration and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

We are seeking an active scholar who can provide leadership, make significant contributions to the teaching, research and service missions of NIE. Candidates must have a strong publication record and academic work experience that would qualify for tenure and appointment at the Associate Professor level or above. Of particular interest are candidates with a strong commitment to teacher education, as well as administrative and leadership experience that have a bearing on managing a large research-active academic department

Candidates are expected to possess at least the following qualifications and qualities:

- a doctoral degree in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics or Language/Literacy Education

- an established record of research

- strong leadership skills in academic administration/management

- experience and interest in faculty development
