We're looking for a dynamic, experienced, hands-on editor with strong people skills to head the dozen-strong Company News filing desk in Bangalore. The desk is pivotal in a drive to raise the quality bar and produce a valuable news file of relevance to a broad range of subscribers.

The desk head will:

• Work with the News Editor and (sectoral) EICs to set the bureau's news agenda

• Motivate the editing team and inspire change and innovation

• Bring financial news expertise, a sense of urgency and an eye for detail

• Help identify those stories that really matter, and deploy resources accordingly

Bangalore is, in so many ways, a unique operation within Reuters Editorial. The rapidly evolving (offshore) newsroom, with some 90 Company News reporters, provides extensive coverage of some 4,000 North American companies, as well as many small-cap UK stocks, regional broker research and other specialist products. Reporters are, by and large, new recruits learning their trade and often looking to more experienced colleagues for guidance and encouragement.

The desk sits at the middle of this, honing grammar, de-bunking corporate jargon and spin, checking facts and challenging reporters to go beyond the raw news to add value, context, colour and, where required, analytical insight.

The arrival of the LYNX production system (in February 2011) will put further short-term strain on the operation and require the filing desk to be more vigilant in copy handling while the new system beds down. Thereafter, the desk will be expected to use LYNX to enhance the presentation of all stories, through copy cross-references, Graphics and other Visuals.

The desk EIC will be a leader, a mentor and a guardian of our high standards on ethics and sourcing.

Day to Day Responsibilities :

• Taking ownership of Bangalore news content; aim to exceed client expectations

• Recruiting and training sub-editors; Challenging them with clearly communicated objectives, and helping them with their career development

• Innovative news planning and packaging; ensure our news file keeps pace with clients' changing needs

• Coordinating with global bureaus/editing desks

• Ensuring content complies with Reuters standards of ethics and sourcing

• Contributing as an active member of the Editor's news leadership team

• Managing the desk rotas, holiday schedules and annual performance appraisals

Additional Information:

Applicants should have completed at least 1 year in their current role.

Required Skills :

• A minimum of 8 years experience in journalism

• A sound understanding of financial markets, balance sheets and our clients' needs

• Proven people management, project execution and editing skills

• Advanced soft skills (listening, providing constructive feedback, networking in and out of Bangalore, motivating)

• Impeccable news judgment, strong communication and organisational skills

• A thorough grounding in TR tools and data, and an ability to actively promote their use in news stories
