CONTEST THEME: Facing Changes
CHOICES FOR CRITICAL LENSES:

CONTESTANTS:
New York State students in grades 6- 12 who have a command of the Chinese language are eligible to participate.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
One entry per contestant
Three (3) entries per advisor
Only essays written in Chinese will be accepted
All entries must follow the format specified below
All entries must be submitted on or before March 15 , 2011
ESSAY REQUIREMENTS:
Contestants must:
1. choose one of the three critical lenses provided above;
2. interpret the selected quote/proverb in your own words;
3. indicate if you agree or disagree with the statement as you have interpreted it;
4. choose one piece of literature (grades 6-8) or two pieces of literature (grades 9-12) you have read that you believe best support your opinion;
5. specify the titles and authors of the literature you choose;
6. organize your ideas in a unified and coherent manner; and
7. discuss the literary devices (e.g., symbolism, metaphor) and elements (e.g. character, plot, and setting) used in the literature selections.
Grades 6-8:
Choose one piece of literature in Chinese to support your opinion. The essay must be written in Chinese and contain between 500 - 1,000 words. It is recommended that participants use a Chinese word processor and double-space entries using a font size of 12.
Grades 9-12:
Choose two Chinese literature pieces to support your opinion. The essay must be written in Chinese and contain between 800 - 1,200 words. It is recommended that participants use a Chinese word processor and double-space entries using a font size of 12.
SUBMISSION PROCEDURES:
Deadline: All entries must be postmarked by March 15, 2011. Entries should be accompanied by the signed copy of the official entry form and the completed Essay Contest Self Check Form.

Electronic submission:
Electronically submitted essays can be e-mailed to ALBETAC@gmail.com by March 15, 2011. In addition, they must be accompanied by a signed copy of the official entry form and the completed Essay Contest Self Check Form, which can be mailed or faxed to ALBETAC at

Please note: Students should keep a copy of their submission, as all essays become the property of the sponsors and will not be returned.

Judging of Entries:
Winning entries will be selected based on the criteria similar to the New York State English Language Arts (ELA) standards.
Award Categories:
There will be three (3) winners and two (2) Honorable Mentions from each group. All winners will receive a certificate of award from the New York State Department of Education Office of Bilingual Education and Foreign Language Studies and the New York City Department of Education. All winners will also receive education-related gifts.
