2011 Call for Papers

Globalization as a phenomenon has influenced tradition, culture and life in the Philippines. In fact, its presence has changed tastes, values and beliefs of people in the islands. It has likewise created new needs among them. Its communication technologies have shaped and reshaped knowledge of people. It is in this context that the conference is designed, using Eastern Visayas Philippines as the prism to understand what is obtaining in the once laid back islands outside Manila.

The conference will be held on July 20-22, 2011 in Tacloban City, Leyte Philippines. Its theme is globalization, culture and identity with special focus on Eastern Visayas. Eastern Visayas as an island group includes the islands of Leyte, Samar, Biliran, Maripipi and the other outlying islands.

Papers may be submitted on the following concerns:

1. Globalization, local culture and identity

2. Global culture and local languages

3. The global economy and the local environment

4. Globalization, culture and governance

5. The small island cultures and globalization

6. Global culture and cultural politics

7. Local literatures and the global culture

8. Communication technologies and local culture

9. The foreign presence in local business

10. Globalization and the quality of life

11. Globalization and religion

12. Globalization and regionalism

Should there be submissions of papers concerning other regions in the country, the organizing committee may consider them and place them in another section of the conference.

About Us

The conference is supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Office of the Governor, Province of Leyte, and the UPV Tacloban College.

The conference organizing committee is composed of Dr. Victor N. Sugbo, Prof. Merlie M. Alunan, Prof. Joycie D. Alegre, Prof. Dulce C. Anacion, Prof. Ma. Zenia D. Mariveles, Ms. Noemi A. Agner, Ms. Rosianette B. Cadayong, Mr. Marnel A. Leona, and Mr. Joseph Lemuel S. Naul.

Submissions

Abstracts

Abstracts should be written in 300 to 400 words. A separate sheet should be provided for the following needed information: (a) full name of the paper presenter, (b) name and address of the academic institution or organization where one is employed, (c) email address(es) and (d) telephone numbers (home tel and mobile tel).

Abstracts should be sent by email to this email address: eastvisyasconference@gmail.com. They should be submitted on or before May 15, 2011.

Papers for presentation will be refereed. Acceptance of papers will be released on June 4, 2011. The paper presenters will be informed via email.

Papers

The full papers should be submitted to conference organizers on June 15, 2011 by email to this address: eastvisayasconference@gmail.com. The papers will be considered for publication.

Registration

The registration fee is 3, 500 pesos for Philippine participants. For foreign participants, the fee is 100 U.S. dollars. The fee will be used for conference materials and food.
