The Liberal Studies Essay Writing Competition aims to provide a platform for students to express their views of what happens in daily life. At the same time, we encourage students to research and respond to major news and social affairs so as to gain knowledge of Liberal Studies. Their English writing skills will also be polished throughout the competition. High-standard essays will then be published on a regular basis in The Student Standard and the Junior Standard with comments and constructive criticisms.
Type of awards
There are three submission periods throughout the competition from now until May 2011. Three students with the best entries will be given awards in each submission period. Throughout the entire competition, the three best students who also submit the most entries covering a wide variety of categories will be named Grand Champion, First Runner-Up and Second Runner-Up in addition to being awarded prizes.
School awards
As well as rewarding students for good written work, the schools that have a high participation from their students will also be recognised.
Essay Types:
Liberal Studies tackles a wide range of topics from everyday life. The written work students submit can be in different formats, e.g., book review, movie review, travelogue, opinion piece and so on (note: creative writing is not appropriate). The students must decide which category their writing fits in.
Eligibility: All local secondary schools students
Language: English only
Format: All entries must be submitted either online or in paper format (A4) by post
Length: Each entry must be no more than 250 words
Judging criteria: Knowledge of the subjects, Critical-thinking mind, Logic (Flow of writing), Originality, Ability to arouse reader’s interest, Fluency, Written quality (grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, etc.)
Adjudication: A panel of Adjudicators will be formed by The Standard and Sing Tao News Corporation
Submission requirements: All details must be filled in for an online application. If by mail, a valid competition entry form must be completed and enclosed.
