Summary of the Job

The Regional Editor for Africa and the Middle East will be responsible for commissioning annual reports for about 15 Country Finance and Country Commerce countries, and delivering manuscripts ready for final edit to deadline and within agreed budgets. In addition, the candidate will monitor regulatory and risk developments in these countries in order to develop future data-driven services on the subject of business regulations. About 40% of this job involves correspondent management, while the remainder consists of editing.

The ideal candidate will develop and maintain a network of proficient correspondents who will write reports while meeting deadlines, budgetary constraints, and adhering to the highest editorial standards. The role will also act as the contact point between editors in New York and correspondents, handling queries to the author and seeing that they are turned around quickly during final edit. Finally, the ideal candidate must be a team player who can work well with marketing and sales members of The Economist to share information about editorial initiatives and help them pursue sales opportunities.

Requirements:

Education and Training

* B.A. or higher, preferably with a degree in international affairs or business-related fields and a strong grounding in economics

Previous Work Experience

* Some additional editorial/management experience preferred

Knowledge

* Regional knowledge of Africa and Middle East political/economic situation a big plus.

IT Skills

* Basic Microsoft Office proficiency

Personal Attributes and Skills

* Well-organised, disciplined, and detail-oriented
* Excellent editing skills, ability to manage far-flung correspondents, and handle monthly deadline pressures.
