EPC-2010 is a continuation of our efforts to provide Muslim Youth with a skill enhancement platform that gives them the opportunity to develop their writing, speaking and leadership skills. This is a forum for articulation, reflection and advancement. This is a youth development event that should not be missed! Be a part of it and experience the difference!

Write, Speak, and Publish!

EPC 2010 THEME: TOWARDS A HEALTHY AND HARMONEOUS FAMILY

CATEGORY* ESSAY/SPEECH TOPICS

ELEMENTARY**: How is my family a great blessing from Allah?

MIDDLE: What lessons have I learned from the Prophet and his family and how can I
apply them in my family?

HIGH SCHOOL PLUS: The Family Epidemic: Diagnose the Problems, Write a Prescription?

**Level 1 writes a letter using a standard business letter format. Please email your scanned letter, or mail 5 copies of handwritten letter (email for address). You handwritten letter must not exceed 250 words or 3 pages.

Essay and Speech Guidelines:

* ONLY the top contestants in the Written Essay contest of each level will participate in the Speech Contest.

**Please use a standard business letter format. Level 1 handwritten letter should not exceed 3 pages.

Strictly adhere to the following guidelines:

DO NOT write your name or any personal information on the body of the text. Use Times
New Roman, 12 point font; no image is allowed in the text. Submit simple text only.
You must register. Your registration information must include: name, address, phone number, grade level, the school/College you are attending, and the organization (sponsor) you are representing.

Email submission (MS WORD Format) is a MUST

DO NOT send multiple essays on the same email. One essay per email.

On the subject line mention: Participant full name (as given on the registration list), Level, Grade, School, and Topic.

Attach a word document following the directions given above.

Scanned submission of letter for Level I only. Please email your scanned letter, or mail 5 copies of handwritten letter (email for address). You letter should not exceed 3 pages. DO NOT write your name or personal information on the letter. Follow the registration information. References must be cited using APA Format (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ )

- for Quran citation use (Sura #: Ayaha #), and for Hadith, use (Source, Hadith #) or APA format Written statements from the parent/guardian and the author confirming that the work was primarily done by the author (Book publication requires that the work is original and their own.) EPC contest is a 3-phase event: Writing, speaking, and publishing.

Top contestants in the Written Essay contest of each level will participate in the Speech Contest. Therefore, preparing and rephrasing the essay for the speech is highly encouraged for all participants upon completion of their essay.

Preregistration is required for participation in EPC 2010 contest.

All essays, posters, and multimedia submitted for this contest become the property of Mafiq Foundation. Mafiq Foundation reserves the exclusive right to use these materials for publishing, circulating, and promotional purpose.

�� Final Ranking for the essay competition will be determined based on totals of the Written and the Speech Contests scores. Gifts are arranged for all participants. Special awards will be given to the top 3 contestants in each level. Two special recognition awards in each level for the best in speech and best in essay. Top essays and posters will be published in EPC book, insha’Allah.

�� The “FINAL EVENT,” which includes: the Panel Discussion, Speech Contest, Poster/Multi-Media Contests, Panel Discussion, and Awards Ceremony, will be held on 23 January, 2011, at Islamic Society Of Washington Area, 2701 Briggs Chaney Road, Silver Spring, MD 20905 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, in-sha’Allah. All participants, their parents, and relatives are encouraged to attend the Award Ceremony at 2:00 pm. The final event is hosted by the ISWA.
