Kunlun is now accepting submissions for its inaugural issue.
Submission Guidelines
We accept submissions year-round in fiction, poetry, non-fiction, as well as cover art. There is no limit to the number of pieces you can send in simultaneously and there is no length restriction either. Novels and novellas may be submitted for serialization.
To submit, please email: kunlunjournal@gmail.com
Make sure to put "Submission" as the subject of your email. In the body of the email, please give a short summary of the work(s) submitted and any bio information you care to include.
Fiction
We are looking for original fiction set in pre-modern China (that is, before the end of the Qing dynasty). Although China is the focus of this publication, fiction set in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, or other Southeast Asian countries will also be considered.
Aside from the historical setting, there is no further thematic requirement. We're looking for well-written, character-driven stories that do more that just show off the author's knowledge of a given historical setting or event. Experimentation with narrative, voice, and other literary techniques is welcome, but not required. Kunlun is the home of both the conventional and the esoteric. Wuxia stories are especially welcomed.
Poetry
Though the focus of Kunlun is fiction, poetry is appreciated and welcome as well. The only requirement is that subject matter steers clear of the contemporary; it must have an historical feel, be it through form or through content.
Non-Fiction
Articles dealing with subjects related to China's history are also accepted. The main focus of nonfiction articles is Chinese literature, but other subjects will be considered. Examples of what we are looking for would be informative essays about literary genres, specific works and authors, as well as opinion pieces relating to Chinese literature. Articles about daily life in ancient and medieval China are also encouraged. All informative articles need to have sources cited, and opinion pieces should be balanced with every argument defended.
Reviews of books and movies are also accepted, be they reviews of novels, scholarly monographs, or reviews of historical films or TV shows. Reviews of relevant video games are also accepted.
Translations
Translations of Chinese stories and poems are accepted and encouraged, but the translator must have proper permission unless the translated works are in the public domain.
Art
Artwork is accepted as long as it is original or the artist has proper permission. We're looking for cover art. The subject can be anything as long as it depicts an historical setting (meaning in the past, but not necessarily a real event or person). All art submissions should be sent in either .jpg, .png, or .tiff formats at 300dpi.
Previously published works are discouraged, but will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For publication, Kunlun Journal of Chinese Historical Fiction acquires First Serial Rights, reverting back to the author after publication. Unfortunately, at this time Kunlun is not a paying publication. Hopefully that will change in the future.
