Volunteer Writer/ Editor Needed for Warm Heart (NGO) Thailand
Warm Heart seeks a creative individual with strong media and writing skills to serve as Writer/Editor for its Communications department. The individual is responsible for drafting and editing materials for external publication, including but not limited to: Warm Heart’s blog, website content, newsletter, and volunteer materials. Current projects this position will work closely with include Warm Heart’s rebranding and website redesign, as well as Warm Heart’s ongoing volunteer project.

Warm Heart is currently undergoing a rebranding and revamping its website. While the foundations of the website are in place, the Writer/Editor will be called upon to draft updated content related to current and upcoming projects, including: microenterprise, biomass, health, and education projects. The Writer/Editor is also tasked with ensuring all volunteer materials (pre-departure information, information about Warm Heart manual, etc.) are up to date and comprehensive.

Volunteering at Warm Heart is an opportunity to immerse yourself in both authentic Thai culture and the beautiful mountains surrounding Warm Heart’s location in Phrao, Northern Thailand. Local villagers will welcome you to share in the simple pleasure of day-to-day life while Phrao’s north central location provides the perfect base camp to explore not only Thailand, but Laos as well. Phrao is also conveniently located just 89 Kilometers north of Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second largest city, where all the comforts of Western culture can be found.

Working for a start-up NGO in a foreign country, especially one located in a small town, places special demands on volunteers. Volunteers will work with a small team of international volunteers in a Thai organization and community. The work is demanding and may be frustrating at times due to linguistic and cultural barriers.

Volunteers must therefore understand that Warm Heart requires individuals who have excellent interpersonal and diversity skills, lots of patience, perseverance and endurance. Warm Heart also requires initiative-taking individuals who are self-starting, flexible and self-managing.

There is no language requirement for volunteers staying less than three months, but Warm Heart encourages volunteers to take an active interest in learning basic Thai words and phrases of day-to-day courtesy. Warm Heart requires interns planning to stay longer than three months to attend an intensive Thai course prior to starting work.

Time Commitment

A 2-3 month minimum commitment, but a longer commitment is ideal, as it will help build sustainability and consistency regarding Warm Heart’s overall education strategy.

ABOUT US

Warm Heart is a grassroots organization that empowers rural Thai villagers. We organize community-initiated projects that provide access to improved education, basic services, jobs and sustainable incomes to the poorest in our community. Every Warm Heart program addresses an acute need by helping them help themselves, and provide economically and environmentally sustainable improvements in living standards. Warm Heart is not a charity. We provide opportunities; program participants must seize them. Warm Heart, too, seeks to be self-sufficient, and as a result wherever possible Warm Heart programs contain a component of financial self-sustainability. Income ge¬ne¬rating programs, such as microenter¬prise, cover not only their own costs, but also Warm Heart’s operating expenses, and generate income for our community. Since opening on July 4th, 2008, Warm Heart has had a tangible impact on breaking the cycle of poverty. Our Villages-in-the-Valley permit eighteen Hill Tribe children to attend school; our After School and Saturday School programs teach more than 150 children five days a week; Microenterprise pays high dividends to local artisans; water projects provide thousands of liters of clean water daily; an isolated village already hosts a Clinic-in-the-Clouds; and almost a thousand pregnant and nursing women and their children receive vitamins daily from Warm Heart. Warm Heart’s core is a committed and caring Thai-international team. The Thai staff is permanent and all of them come from our community. Warm Heart also benefits from an ever changing and often returning group of volunteers from all over the world.
