Assistant or Recent Associate Professor in Classical Chinese Studies
The Gallatin School of Individualized Study, New York University and the Department of East Asian Studies at New York University invite leading interdisciplinary scholars in Ancient and Classical Chinese Studies to apply for a joint faculty position to commence on September 1, 2011 at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track). Candidates should have a research focus in fields from early Antiquity through the Song Dynasty; teaching interests may be wider, extending through the Ming Dynasty.
We seek an interdisciplinary scholar whose research fields include Ancient or Classical Chinese literature, history, philosophy, or religion, the analysis of Classical Chinese texts (transmitted or excavated) in their historical context, and a broader perspective on Classical Chinese culture. The ideal candidate will be able to design and teach imaginative and innovative courses on the Chinese Classics within broad, cross-cultural and historically comparative contexts for an undergraduate student body of non-majors in Asian Studies, as well as work with majors and graduate students in the Dept. of East Asian Studies. Candidates should have native or near-native fluency in English, with excellent reading skills in Classical Chinese. Prospective candidates for this position might hold degrees in literature, philosophy, religion, or history.
The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in interdisciplinary teaching and in advising individualized undergraduate and research programs.
Qualifications Ph.D. in hand by time of appointment; demonstrated excellence in teaching at the university level; a strong record of research and writing.
