Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) and Hong Kong Joint Publishing are staging a third Young Writers’ Debut competition for aspiring authors born in 1970 or later, with creative professionals and veteran writers providing one-on-one coaching to shortlisted candidates as they finish their first books. The books will debut at the Hong Kong Book Fair next year. The competition is another SHKP Book Club initiative to promote reading and writing.
Wide Distribution
SHKP and Joint Publishing held the first competition to help young writers realize their dreams in 2006, and the two competitions saw over ten writers get their first books published. The books came out the Hong Kong Book Fair and were distributed through bookstores in Hong Kong, on the mainland and in Southeast Asia. One title – Hong Kong Pop-ups – set a local circulation record of 6,000 copies, and some of the other winners have had second books published.
Distinguished Judges
This competition is open to writers born in 1970 or later. The theme is ‘life’ and the books can include characters, graphics or multi-media work. The judges from different creative fields will act as mentors to provide one-on-one coaching to shortlisted candidates with guidance and inspire them to understand creative perspectives, market trends and content requirement.
Judges include People Mountain People Sea member and music producer Yu Yat-yiu, Thumb Magazine editor and writer Victor Hui, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts lecturer and writer Chan Wai, Commercial Radio Hong Kong strategic planning director Vincent Wong, Hong Kong Baptist University Academy of Visual Arts School lecturer and cartoonist Justin Wong, City Magazine joint founder and writer Peter Dunn and film director Stanley Kwan.
Helping Young Writers
SHKP Vice Chairman and Managing Director Raymond Kwok said: “The last two competitions aroused high interest and the number of entrants, quality and creativity were exceptional. The books proved that there are a lot of young people who are passionate about writing and creative work and have a great deal of creativity and perseverance. With sufficient support and guidance, they can shine and contribute to literature in Hong Kong.”
Hong Kong Joint Publishing Deputy Editor-in-Chief Anne Lee said: “I look forward to this project with SHKP and the results it produces. A lot of young people in Hong Kong have strong feelings for creative work and for this place, and I am impressed by their writing, observation and originality. I hope the expanded age limit in the third competition will bring more young talent to the writing scene.”
Book Fair Debut and Hong Kong Distribution
The theme is ‘life’ and no restrictions on presentation style. Entries should be in Chinese, and candidates should submit a book proposal along with approximately 5% of the content by December 20, 2010.
Ten to 16 candidates will be shortlisted and will each receive HK$3,000 in cash and HK$2,000 in book coupons. They will then get one-on-one coaching by the judges and the best five to eight will be offered contracts with Joint Publishing. The books will debut at the Hong Kong Book Fair in July next year and the first edition would not be less than 1,000 copies. It will be distributed through major bookstores in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. The authors will also be entitled to royalties.
