Student Poetry Competition: Calling all Emirati and British Poets
Deadline: 6 November 2010

Calling all young Emirati and British poets! Tap your creative genius to write a poem on bilateral friendship and partnership!

The Theme

On the occasion of the historic State visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to the UAE, we are delighted to announce a poetry competition in English and in Arabic for young learners on the theme of historical ties and ongoing friendship between the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.

Selection Criteria

* Entries will be judged on literary merit and the extent to which they successfully embody the concept of partnership and friendship between the UK and the UAE.
* The poems must be of suitable length for recitation within 2 minutes at normal register, or not in excess of 200 words.
* Entries for the Arabic poem are particularly encouraged in the Nabati tradition of poetry.

The Prize

We anticipate that the winners of both English and Arabic competitions will have the honour of reciting their poem in front of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, His Highness the Duke of Edinburgh and an invited audience of Emirati and British guests on Thursday 25 November 2010.

Eligibility

* The competition for Arabic poems is open only to UAE nationals.
* The competition for English poems is open only to British nationals who are resident in the UAE.
* Entrants must be 12-16 years of age, and, most importantly, have the confidence to recite the poem in front of an audience.

Deadline

The poems should be typed on a Word document with the name of the student, the student’s age and birthday, the school’s name, contact number and e-mail address clearly written and submitted along with the signed parental consent form, on or before 06 November 2010 to british.council@ae.britishcouncil.org
