Free to Enter: The Craigslist Chronicles (short story contest )
Deadline: 15 October 2010

Are you tired? Bored? Lost your pep? Has your get-up-and-go got up and gone? Or do you just need a new couch?

If you’re tired, Craigslist has beds for sale, as well as pillows, sheets, blankets, comforters, Afghans, pillowcases, bedspreads, shams and bedskirts. If you’re bored, someone at this very moment is selling an old checkerboard, darts, air hockey table, badminton set, foosball table, karaoke player, vintage PacMan arcade game, or a stack of mint-condition Hardy Boys books. If you’ve lost your pep, you could probably buy a coffeemaker, coffee mugs, spoons, and a case of instant coffee. If you need to get your get-up-and-go back, you could look for it during the Hawaiian vacation that’s posted right now in the “for sale” section (I’m not making that up, either), or you could give yourself some real zip with a new Porsche. And if you stacked end-to-end all the couches for sale on Craigslist right now…well, that’s a whole lotta couches.

My point? Craigslist has become an indispensable resource, the first place we turn when we’re in need, and part of our everyday lives. That’s probably why Juan Vandendorp – winner of our inaugural contest, The Coffee Shop Chronicles, soon to be published in anthology form and available for sale on this very site – was inspired to suggest Craigslist as the topic for our next contest. When our fans speak, we listen. So here it is . . .

THE CRAIGSLIST CHRONICLES

* The goal: Write a short story (fact or fiction) featuring Craigslist in some way. Use real ads or make up your own – but Craigslist should somehow be central to the story.
* The parameters: 600 words max, limit two entries per person.
* The prize: $100 cash, and possible inclusion in our next anthology.
* The way: Each submission should be e-mailed as a separate Word or rtf attachment to monika@awordwithyoupress with your name and e-mail address on each page of the document.
* The end: Midnight October 15.
