In celebration of the 14th Philippine Book Development Month, the National Book Development Board, in partnership with the Filipinas Heritage Library and the National Book Store, will present the First Manila International Literary Festival, to be held on November 18 to 20, at the Intercontinental Hotel Manila.
LOL: Literature Out Loud seeks to engage a large community of writers and readers, students and teachers, as they face traditional and emerging concerns in literature through this three-day festival. It will bring together nationally and internationally acclaimed writers, local and foreign publishing experts, teachers of literature, as well as fans of various genres of writing to create a dialogue on the state of literature today.
Among the foreign writers who will attend the festival are Vikas Swarup, whose novel, Q&A, has been adapted into the Oscar award-winning movie, Slumdog Millionaire; Christopher Cheng, who has published critically acclaimed books of fiction and nonfiction for young adults and children; Andy Mulligan, author of young adult novel Trash; literary agents Mita Kapur and Jayapriya Vasudevan; and David Parker, the chair of the board of the Man Asian Literary Prize.
The festival will begin with a keynote speech from Jose Dalisay Jr., award-winning writer and teacher, on the state of literature, especially the novel, in Asia and the Philippines today. Dalisay will also serve as a moderator in a panel discussion on the novel.
Also scheduled are several break-out sessions, where topics ranging from literary criticism to publishing will be discussed. The last afternoon of the festival will be dedicated to book and poetry readings, book signings, and book launches.
Tickets will be priced at P800.00 per day or P2,000 for the entire festival.
