Emirates Airline Festival of Literature's Story Writing Contest

The organisers of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature today called on school children and undergraduates in full-time education across the UAE to put pen to paper for the 2011 Students' Writing Competition. The theme for this year's competition is "The Mystery". The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature will take place from 8 to 12th March, 2011 under the patronage of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture).

This year’s competition is sponsored by Montegrappa, Italian manufacturer of exclusive writing instruments that combine elegance, style design and passion. Charles Nahhas, Managing Director of Montegrappa Middle East, said: “We are happy to lend our support to the Students’ Writing Competition. Initiatives such as this encourage and showcase the writing talent of the next generation. Our participation underpins our support of the educational components of the Festival, which help to fuel a love of words in children and youth through activities that impact thousands of students – inspiring them to embrace reading and writing.”

The 2011 Students’ Writing Competition will have four categories; ‘ages 11 and under’, ‘ages 12 to 14’, ‘ages 15 to 18’ and ‘ages 18 and above for undergraduate students in full time education’. The maximum word count for children in the category ‘ages 11 and under’ will be 500 words. The maximum word count for the children in the category ‘ages 12 to 14’ will be 1000 words. The maximum word count for the students in the category ‘ages 15 to 18’ and ‘ages 18 and above studying in full time undergraduate programs’, will be 1500 words. Students are invited to submit their stories in either English or Arabic before the closing date of 12th November, 2010.

Schools and universities are invited to sign up to participate in the Students’ Writing Competition Roadshow at their campus. Comprising an entertaining and informative presentation from the Emirates Lit Fest team, the roadshow is designed to excite young people about writing and encourage them to take part in the competition.

All the winning entries will be published by Jerboa Books in a bilingual book of short stories entitled The Mystery. The winners will receive 5 copies of the book and be invited to an official Winners’ Ceremony at the 2011 festival, where their co-authored book will be launched. Additional prizes will be supplied by Montegrappa in the form of luxury writing instruments.
