Asyenda is a collection of poems, short short stories, and creative non-fiction written in Filipino, English or any of the Philippine languages (with accompanying translation) on the politics of land ownership in the Philippines.
Consider the following: the Mendiola massacre of 27 January 1987 resulting in the deaths of 13 farmers remains unresolved; no justice has been given to the November 2004 shooting a...t the Hacienda Luisita picketline, leaving seven peasant workers dead and dozens injured; in July 2010, peasants of Hacienda Yulo in Laguna stage a hunger strike to stop the ongoing land use conversion of 7,100 hectare estate of the Yulo family; and in September 2010, farmers Vicente Felisida of Compostela Valley and Reynaldo Labrador of Davao City became the latest victims of extrajudicial killings of Oplan Bantay Laya, which remains in place during the Aquino administration.
Please submit work that articulate the conditions and struggles of Filipino peasants and peasant workers. This is a Publikasyong Iglap/Flash Publication anthology of CONTEND (Congress of Teachers for Nationalism and Democracy) and ACT (Alliance of Concerned Teachers). The challenge is to submit the works in two weeks, by October 20, 2010 to Joi Barrios and Roland Tolentino, co-editors. Please send to mjbarrio2@mac.com or magpaubaya@yahoo.com.
