.....ever felt as if you were “Lost in Translation” in Korea?

.....ever encountered difficulties in Korea due to language barriers?

.....ever felt that the language barrier hindered your social relationships in Korea?

BBB Korea, a telephone service run by volunteers to help foreign nationals communicate with Koreans in daily situations, is pleased to announce its very first essay contest in 2010. The theme is “Share your Stories”. Write in to share your personal experiences of language barrier problems or your general reflections on language barriers in Korea. In addition, experiences of utilizing the BBB Korea interpretation service or any other topics relevant to language barrier problems in Korea will be welcomed.

Certificates and monetary prizes will be awarded to selected writers.

Essay contest on language barrier problems in Korea: Suggested Topics

1) Personal experience with a language barrier in Korea

2) General reflection on language issues in Korea

3) Suggestions and possible solutions to bridge language communications in Korea

4) Experiences of utilizing the BBB Korea interpretation service or your thoughts on the service

5) Any other topics related to language barrier problems in Korea.

Eligibility: any foreign resident in Korea

Writing format: essay/prose (no longer than 3 pages on A4 sheets)

Writing language: Korean or any of the 17 languages that the BBB Korea interpretation service offers (English, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, French, German, Arabic, Italian, Turkish, Polish, Swedish, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Spanish, Portuguese)

Submission Period: Oct. 13th, 2010 (Wed) ~ Nov. 12th, 2010 (Fri)

Awards notification: Nov. 29th, 2010 (Mon); Winners will be contacted individually. Results will also be posted on the BBB Korea website.

Submission:

- Download the registration form from the BBB website www.bbbkorea.org
- Fill out the registration form - in English only.
- Complete the registration form before writing.
- Both registration form and essay must be sent in together to be valid for contest submission.
- Entries can be submitted either by email or mail to;

Address: BBB Korea, 4th floor Hannam Building, 737-37, Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul (Submission entries postmarked after Nov. 12th will not be considered).

Prizes

- First place (1 winner): certificate and W300,000
- Second place (2 winners): certificate and W100,000
- Third place (10 winners): certificate and W50,000

Note

- Essays will not be returned once submitted, and BBB Korea reserves all the rights over the submitted articles.
- Plagiarized entries in any form will not be considered.
- BBB Korea reserves the right to revoke and retrieve the prize if any plagiarism is discovered even after the prizes have been awarded.
- Taxes imposed on the monetary prizes will be the responsibility of the winners (paid by the recipient).
- BBB Korea has the right to withhold the prizes if no submission entry is deemed worthy of merit.
