Deadline: 20 November 2010
WRITING IN SWISS FIVE STAR HOTELS
The Swiss Deluxe Hotels are members of the association of 39 of the foremost five star hotels in Switzerland and have a rich tradition when it comes to hosting famous authors. This tradition is being revived and reinterpreted with the "Writers in Residence" project. We are looking for writers who would like to spend three days between February and September 2011 in one of our hotels to work on a short story. The stories will be published on April 23, 2012 - the International Day of the Book - via multimedia platforms and subsequently in our guest magazine with a short biography of the author. The author will be paid a royalty.
Who can take part? Criteria for selection
The project is aimed primarily at writers of Swiss origin or those who live and work in Switzerland. International writers may also take part. The main criterium for selection is that the author must have written at least two published novels, not including self-published work or material published by a paid publishing service.
Applications must be submitted by November 20, 2010.
The applications will then be assessed according to further criteria such as language, diversity of genre, gender and geographic origin.
Where can I apply?
The application for the "Writers in Residence" project will be published on the website of the Association of Swiss Writers (www.a-d-s.ch) from September 16 until November 20. Applications must be submitted online to the Swiss Deluxe Hotels website (www.swissdeluxehotels.com). Hotel managers of the participating hotels may also submit to the project management the names of up to five writers they are acquainted with and have contacted directly regarding the application process by November 20.
Who selects the participants?
The project management selects the participants, comprising the Management and Head of Media & Public Relations of the Swiss Deluxe Hotels. Cordula Seger, cultural scientist, co-publisher of the book "Grand Hotel - Bühne der Literatur" (Grand Hotel - a literary stage) and lecturer of modern German literature at the Institute for German language studies at Vienna University will be assisting the project management in an advisory capacity.
The selection process will take place at the beginning of December 2010. The writers selected according to the above criteria will be notified and given the details of their hotel by December 20 at the latest. The project management and the writers will enter into a written agreement detailing the services to be rendered by each party.
All other applicants will be notified in writing. The decision cannot be contested. The project management will not enter into any correspondence relating to the decision.

* The writer authorises the project management to commission a translation of his/her text into English and/or German and/or French and/or Italian. A copy of the translation will be provided to the writer in a timely manner. The work will be completed by translators who have hitherto worked for SDH.
* The writer may hold a public reading of the text (and his/her other current work) on a date to be specified and by arrangement with the hotel.
Where and when will the texts be published?
A media activity plan foresees coverage by yet to be specified media during the writers' three-day stays. The focus is on national and supra-regional media including leading print issues and first and foremost audio-visual media (culture programming on various TV channels).
The project management will publish the texts on April 23, 2012 - the International Day of the Book - among other channels on the Swiss Deluxe Hotels website, and will inform the public at a media conference as well as in a special newsletter. Four special writers' issues will be published (Summer 2012; Winter 2012/13; Summer 2013; Winter 2013/14), containing eight to ten short stories (including a short writer biography) and news from the member hotels. The texts will be published in English and German or French or Italian after the translations have been authorised by the writers. Print publishing of the texts will be exclusive to "Ambiance" magazine. The text is at the author's disposal after the publishing date in "Ambiance" magazine; also for further print reproduction, with the condition that a reference is made to the project for which it was written.
The hotel and the writer may hold a public reading of the text (and the writer's other current work) by agreement on a date after April 23, 2012. The hotel is responsible for the organisation and payment of any fee in relation to such an event. This is not included in the written agreement between the project management and the writer detailing the services to be rendered by each party.
