The Center for Chinese Language Teacher Certification and Development was established in August 2009 to set a national and international standard of excellence for Chinese language teacher preparation, certification, and further development. The most immediate purpose is to expand the teaching of Chinese throughout this geographic area by recruiting students into one
of our four routes to Chinese language teacher certification. In addition, the Center is modifying existing courses in the Second Language Education and Culture unit to better prepare teachers in Chinese pedagogy. The Center actively promotes the study of Chinese language and culture throughout the University and wider community.
We are looking for someone to provide expertise in developing a strong content Chinese language teaching program as well as teach courses and workshops. Experience with online course delivery is desired.
The Chinese Language Expert position is a minimum of half time, with additional time possible for other responsibilities. If the candidate has the requisite skills and background, the position can include administrative leadership responsibilities, such as coordinating oversight of the goals of the center with the Co-director from the Confucius Institute of Maryland, developing policies and priorities for the Center, and developing and implementing recruitment strategies. Salary will be commensurate to the person’s duties, skills, and experience.
Essential Background
- Knowledge of Teaching of Chinese/Foreign Language/Second Language
- Knowledge of Chinese language field in the U.S., especially grades K-12
- Knowledge of Chinese language and culture
Responsibilities as Chinese Language Expert
- Oversee the development of foreign language teaching course modifications as needed
- Teach Chinese pedagogy classes and/or prepare instructors in the course modifications as needed
- Develop materials and professional development workshops
- Lead workshops on the teaching of Chinese language and culture
- Research best practices of Chinese teaching to integrate into courses
- Represent the Center in professional associations and conferences
