Phoenix Pick Excellence Award for Science/ Fantasy Fiction (no submission fee)

25 September 2010
Phoenix Pick Excellence Award for Science/ Fantasy Fiction (no submission fee)
Deadline: 15 October 2010

What is Phoenix Pick? Phoenix Pick is the science fiction and fantasy imprint of Arc Manor Publishers. You can check out our catalogue by clicking here.

What type of story is eligible? Any new science fiction or fantasy story with a word count up to 17,500 words (no minimum limit) that was published online between July 1, 2009 and June 2010 by a publication that publishes primarily online.

What is the cost of submission? None. There is no fee for submitting stories for consideration for the award.

Who will evaluate the stories? Eleanor Wood (of the Spectrum Literary Agency), Alexei Panshin (Hugo and Nebula winning author and critic), and Ashley Crump (writer/reviewer) have graciously agreed to volunteer their time in helping evaluate the stories.

The final winner will be decided by an online vote of SF Signal readers from the pool of finalists created after an initial evaluation of all submissions.

Can authors enter their stories directly? Unfortunately not. At this point we are not accepting submissions directly from authors.

Who can submit stories for consideration? Editors or publishers who have published the stories online may submit up to two stories per publication/magazine. The publication needs to have had an online presence for at least one year prior to the submission date.

Why are you only accepting stories from publications and not directly from authors? We are relaying on a small group of volunteers to manage this program. Since we do not want to charge a submission fee, we run the danger of getting overwhelmed by submissions if we allow direct, unfiltered, submissions by authors. This rule may change in the future as we develop this program.

What is the prize? The total prize amount is dependent upon donations. However, a minimum prize amount of $650.00 is guaranteed by Phoenix Pick Publishers. The total prize will be split between the publication submitting the winning entry and the author, with the author getting 2/3 of the prize share and the publication 1/3.

If the total amount of the prize becomes larger than $1,500, Phoenix Pick may, at its sole discretion, split the prize to provide a portion of the prize to the second (and if applicable) third place winners. However, the complete amount donated will be distributed to winners of the competition.

Who can become a donor of the prize? Anyone can donate any amount and be listed as a sponsor. All donations will be clearly listed on this website to ensure transparency. All donations will go directly towards the prize (not be used for any other purpose). If you wish to donate, please click here. Publications submitting entries (and affiliated organizations, or people affiliated with the publication) and authors (and their families) may not donate funds towards the prize.

What is the deadline for submitting stories? October 15, 2010, though we reserve the right to extend the date.

Are there any other conditions? No. Any story meeting the criteria above is eligible.

Will Phoenix Pick publish an anthology of the stories submitted? If the authors are willing and the rights are available Phoenix Pick intends to publish a selection of the submitted stories in an anthology. However, agreement from the author or the original publisher of the story to allow the story to be published in an anthology is not a requirement for consideration of an award.
