Announcement: 2010 English Translation of Korean Classics Library 100

Korean Studies Promotions Service is pleased to announce two projects for 2010 to participate in the translation and publication of a series in one specific field (literature, thought, or history) in the “English Translation of Korean Classics Library 100”. The period of support will be up to a total of 3 years. The amount of financial support for each project is 200 million KRW per year. In 2007, Korean Studies Promotion Service launched a program to support the translation of 100 Korean Classics into English. The 100 Korean Classics were carefully selected and evaluated for quality, and we believe that English translation of these texts will make the international library holdings for Korean Studies that much stronger contribute to the development of world culture in the future, and be useful tools for education.

- Applicants may apply for one of the following series of Korean Classics Library 100:

1) Literature series
2) Philosophy series
3) History series

※ Please refer to the attached “Korean Classics Library 100” list

※ Applicants were selected in 2007 and early 2010. Those already engaged in translation with the support of KSPS or AKS should be excluded.

※ All research results are required to be published as books

Scope of Support

- Scope of support: 200 million Korean Won per year for each series project (up to two projects)

- Translate a minimum of 10 texts over a 3 year period for each project (1 series): total of 600 million Korean Won

※ The grant amount includes editing costs, translation fee, and all other related costs.
※ The Korean currency exchange will be used as the standard for currency exchange.
※ The funding amounts will not be exceeded in any circumstance.
※ Researchers are required to provide information of their translation fee per A4 sheet and the total of expected number of pages of the final translation

Support Specification

- Translate and publish a series in one specific field (literature, thought, or history) chosen from the “Korean Classics Library 100”

- All translations must include a bibliographical introduction and annotations

- Translation must be completed within set time, and translated works must be published with a European or North American academic publishers within 2 years of completion of the research period.

※Budget for each text will be requested dependent on its quantity and difficulty within the range of the total budget.

- Online Application: 3:00pm, Monday 27 September, 2010 - 5:00pm, Thursday 30 September, 2010. (Korean Time)

- Postal submission of documents: until 6:00pm Thursday 7 October, 2010. (Korean Time)

※ Applications submitted by post must arrive at the Academy of Korean Studies before the deadline.

1) Download “Application Guidelines for English Translation of Korean Classics Library 100” from our website.

2) Write a project proposal and other required documents using the formats given in the guidelines (please use MS word or PDF)

3) Submit a project proposal and other documents online by deadline;
