Take a given premise and produce a short story. The story can be written (750 words maximum), illustrated as a graphic short story (2 pages maximum), or recorded as an audio or video piece (3-minutes maximum).

Eligibility

* Contestants must be thirteen (13) years of age or older. After Waking Creative Group employees and their relatives are ineligible.

Rules:

* All entries must be original works, not previously published in professional media.
* By submitting a work, a participant confirms that they are the rights holder or have obtained permission to use all elements of that work.
* Entries must be produced in the English language, or, in the case of a video production, contain English subtitles.
* All entries must conform to the stated story restrictions. Written pieces cannot exceed 750 words. Illustrated pieces cannot exceed 2 pages. Audio/video recordings cannot exceed 3-minute playing times.
* If submitted online, entries must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. EDT, October 20, 2010.
* If submitted by mail, entries must be postmarked no later than October 20, 2010.
* Participants may submit multiple entries but are required to pay an entry fee for each submission.
* Although the given premise remains copyright of the After Waking Creative Group, participants retain all copyrights to their submitted work.
* This contest is void where prohibited

Prizes:

* First prize is $1000.00 CAD
* Second prize is $500.00 CAD
* Third prize is $250.00 CAD

Winners will be announced on www.afterwaking.com on December 20, 2010. Prize winners will also be notified by e-mail and/or mail. Prizes will be sent by mail.

How to Submit:

* Submissions can be made online via the Online Entry Form
* All online submissions will receive an entry confirmation via e-mail.
* Mail-in-entries are also permitted, but must be accompanied by a completed Mail-in Entry Form.
* Mail-in entries that include a SASE will receive an entry-confirmation, however any material mailed for consideration will not be returned. Mailed-in written works can be single or double spaced; mailed-in illustrated works must fit on 8 ½ x 11 inch pages; mailed-in audio/video recordings must be burned to a CD/DVD.
* Those choosing to mail entries may send them w/ the required fees to:

Fees:

* For residents of Canada, entry fees are $5.00 CAD per entry
* For participants outside Canada, entry fees are $5.00 USD per entry
* Participants making online submissions must pay fees after completing the Online Entry Form
* Participants mailing in their submissions may send cash, cheques or money orders

* If possible, please avoid sending cash/coins in the mail. Participants outside Canada may send U.S. currency, but are advised to use International money orders. Payments made in currencies other than Canadian or U.S. will not be accepted.

* Make all cheques and money orders payable to After Waking Creative Group.

* Submissions that do not include valid entry fees will be disqualified.
* All fees are non-refundable

Extras:

* For those who wish to discuss the project, one-hour moderated chats will be held on most Sundays at 3 p.m. EDT.
* Anyone is welcome to participate in these sessions. Prospective participants are advised to check the Discussions page for ongoing chats or chat archives.

* Upon the contest closing date, October 20, 2010, all confirmed contest participants will be granted a non-exclusive licence to use the published premise for their own purposes. Contest participants will be permitted to adapt, modify, and/or derive from the premise as they wish.
