The Mellow Neurotics Seeks Rebellious Works
Deadline: year-round
Geographical coverage: international
Reading Fee: none
Accepts (genre): fiction, plays, poetry, non-fiction
Prize/Payment: publication

Even though we're a rebellious literary journal, there are a few general guidelines everyone must follow in order to avoid total pandemonium.

Submissions are year-round and can fall under the following four categories: Fiction/Flash Fiction, Non-Fiction/Reviews, Short Screenplays/Stage Plays, and Poetry. We are unable to pay for publication at this time, but you do get the bragging rights of being a published author on a fancy web site.

Send submissions to themellowneurotics@gmail.com. Send only one piece at a time. For poetry, you may send up to 3 pieces. All submissions must be sent in .doc, or in Microsoft Word or Pages. When you are submitting, the subject line should have the title of your piece, followed by the genre ("Title" - Genre). For example: "Dinosaurs in Love" - Fiction.

Authors retain all rights to their work, but please let us know if your submission has been published elsewhere. We will try to respond to you within five weeks. If you don't hear from us after 3 months, feel free to inquire about your piece.

Fiction/Flash Fiction

Realism is our preferred genre, and we do not accept any kind of genre fiction (sci-fi, romance, detective, etc...). We tend to favour witty, dark humour, and we cringe at storylines that sound like they came from a Nicholas Sparks novel.

In Chuck Palahniuk's 13 writing tips, he suggests writing about the issues that really upset you. Don't waste your time sending us conventional stories in which you have no personal attachment. Keep submissions to a maximum of 3000 words. We can make exceptions for works of genius, but try to keep it within the guidelines.

Flash Fiction should be 1000 words or fewer.

Non-Fiction/Reviews

This is similar to the Fiction guidelines. Non-Fiction should be a maximum of 3000 words, and writers should avoid clichéd ideas or story lines. Non-Fiction can be anything from creative non-fiction, memoir, travel writing, or whatever suits your fancy.

Reviews have a theme which is "the most relaxed Type A's reviewing everything humanly possible." We prefer reviews that complain about contemporary culture or minor grievances in day-to-day life. If you want to review the vile way your cat eats its breakfast, we would love to publish it as long as it has a unique perspective. We will also gladly accept movie and music reviews (we're indie nerds).

Short Screenplays/Stage Plays

It doesn't have to be Shakespeare or the master works of Jean-Luc Godard. Dazzle us with some cynicism or interesting dialogue and you're set.

Try to keep it between 1500-3000 words.

Poetry

Again, conventional poems devoid of meaning will not get published. Also, be wary of incorporating references. For instance, if you quote lyrics from Train's "Drops of Jupiter" in your poem, not only will your work be rejected but you will be the source of mockery and shame for everyone at this website, and for the people in your knitting circle.

Poems can be up to 1500 words.
