Frequently asked questions and answers about teaching in Korea
Q: Do I need to know the language or learn it so I can get around or do my job?
A: No, and you aren’t required to learn it. Most of South Korea has street signs both commercial and transportation in English. The supervisor that you’ll be working with and the other teachers will have a good command of the English language. Should you wish to learn Korean (Hangul) your employer should be more than happy to provide you with opportunities to learn as well.
Q: What is S.Korea like as a country and people?
A: South Korea is a highly developed nation and has the 10th largest economy in the world and therefore has a high standard of living. It has all the amenities, luxuries and consumption habits of developed western countries (if not more so) but is also surrounded by the beauty and charm of ancient Korean civilization. Korean's are among the most hospitable people in the world and will always welcome you with open arms. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say you could easily make yourself at home in Korea.
Q: What’s the job like? What am I going to do exactly?
A: In short the job is a lot of fun! You will be working for either an after school English academy or at a public school under EPIK teaching elementary to high school aged students. Your supervisor will instruct you on what lessons to give and what homework assignments to give and training will be provided prior to this. The students are fun to work with because they will be curious and interested in you as a foreign teacher and about the English language. Work weeks are 30-40hrs and is fairly laid back. Many of our teachers have enjoyed doing this so much that they have turned this into a full-time career and have lived in Korea for years!
Q: What’s to do while I’m in Korea?
A: South Korea has much to offer for those looking for adventure and travel. There are scenic walking tours to extravagant shopping malls. Most urban centers will have cultural events to attend and will have a vibrant night life consisting of karaoke bars, late night shopping and restaurants. As a foreigner it’s easy to meet new people and make friends. Most English teachers in Korea will say that they have never once been bored while living in Korea!
