Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development has set the 26th of October 2010 as the deadline for accepting entries of the prestiguous Al Burda Awards, instituted to commemorate life of the venerable Prophet Mohammed (PBUH).
The Award aims to appraise the personality of the Prophet (PBUH) and his rich memoirs at the day of the Prophet's Birthday through: creating spirit of competition between participants and encouraging the spirit of creation in making more effort and time to read the memoirs of the Prophet (PBUH), honouring distinctive and creative poets, calligraphers and plastic artists from all over the Islamic world, praising the civilized image of the UAE and its care to uphold the teachings of the true religion to serve the people of the Islamic world, confirming the Islamic values and highlighting their role in the life and recognizing officials and bodies who distinctively have served Islam in the world and individuals who offer distinguished achievements and creations.
The total value of the awards is Dhs.1,190,000.
Categories include classical Arabic poetry, Nabati poetry, and calligraphy. The calligraphy category includes both traditional, “classic" style calligraphy - Naskh and Nastalik - and modern style calligraphy, while the third category of the prize includes decorative work.
Poems must have no less than 30 and no more than 50 verses; that the poem is original and has not previously received awards in other competitions in the UAE or abroad. In the Arabic calligraphy category the rules state that artists must write "Qasidat al-Burda", the famous 167 verse poem by Al Busairi, in both Naskh and Nastalik calligraphy. As for the decorative works category, the work must cover, without any spaces, 70% of a 40x55cm canvas made of al muqhar paper.
Jurors: Moahmed Ozagi, Dr. Mostafa Arghodarman, and Nagati of Turkey, Abass Akawayin and Mohamed Baqer Aqameeri of Iran for the traditional calligraphy and decorative work. Whilst jurors for the modern calligraphy works are Dr. Mohamed Youssif, Dr. Najat Makki, Abdul Rahim Salim, and Abdul Qadir Al Rayes of the UAE.
