Brunei Darussalam will be hosting the Asia Pacific Publishers Association, APPA Meeting next year. The meeting will be held in conjunction with the Book Fair organised in celebration of the 27th Brunei Darussalam National Day as well as the 50th anniversary of the Language and Literature Bureau. This is among the outcome of a similar meeting held in Cebu Philippines recently.
According to the Acting Director of the Language and Literature Bureau, Dayang Hajah Aminah binti Momin, each year member countries will submit the books and the winning country will be presented with an award. This year the award was won by Thailand for publishing quality books and contributing more than 16 thousand titles. She added that Brunei Darussalam has never entered any books as the books evaluated are those jointly published by two member countries using the respective countries' mother-tongue. This is a way of extend the books to other countries. Eventhough Brunei has not made such a co-operation but plans have been made for a number of books to be published between Brunei and India, Thailand, Philippines and Pakistan. The books to be published will lean more towards children's books.
During the two day meeting, a forum on the responsibilities of member countries and methods to market books in the Asia Pacific region were also discussed. Brunei Darussalam was also appointed as the Vice President for next year's meeting and for the coming five years together with the Republic of Korea, Philippines, Japan and Singapore.
