LEAVING YESLER (Pleasure Boat Studio, NYC) is Peter Bacho's first young adult novel. The plot follows the life of Bobby Vicente, who in 1968 is almost 18. Bobby is trying to make a better life for himself beyond Seattle's Yesler Terrace housing project. He hopes to go to college. However, in quick order, he has had to confront a tragic trifecta - the deaths of his beloved Creole mother and his protective older brother (killed in Vietnam) - and the looming death of his Filipino father. Toss in Bobby's own nagging questions about his ethnic and sexual identities - not to mention a body-hungry draft board - and the odds of survival look overwhelming. Or are they?
PETER BACHO is the author of five books: Cebu, Dark Blue Suit, Boxing in Black and White, Nelson's Run, and his latest, Entrys. His books have received several awards, including the 1992 American Book Award. He is a writing professor at Evergreen State College. Bacho was born in Seattle, Washington in 1950 and grew up in Seattle’s Central District.
