Deadline: 20 April 2013
Calling all Qatari high school students! Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar is pleased to announce its Annual High School Essay Competition, encouraging young people to share their views on becoming a doctor in Qatar. Three lucky winners will receive Doctor of the Future Summer Scholarships: A fully funded, 2-week experience-of-a-lifetime at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, where they will visit prominent research laboratories and spend time with distinguished Weill Cornell physicians in major New York hospitals.
BEST ESSAYS: The winning essays and ten finalists will receive honorable mentions in a reception hosted by the dean of WCMC-Q.
PARTICIPATION: “Healing Hands: Caring Without Borders” is this year’s theme. In recent years, Qatari aid organizations have taken a leading role in caring for those stricken by natural disasters and conflict. For instance, they have offered relief to flood victims and medical aid and support to refugees fleeing the conflict zones. Imagine that you are a physician taking part of a Qatari medical team tasked to respond to a humanitarian crisis. What would you do to ensure the health of the victims? What preventive measures would you include in your plan to contain the outbreak of contagious diseases such as malaria, cholera, yellow fever, hepatitis C, HIV etc.? Write an 800-word essay to describe your mitigation plan in detail, explaining the role of your medical team and defending your course of action.
