Lake Forest College seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Chinese Language and Literature to begin August 2013. This faculty member will be a member of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and play a key role in the College’s Asian Studies Program. Qualified candidates will have a Ph.D. in Chinese language or literature and native or near-native fluency in standard spoken and written Mandarin and English. Experience with college-level language teaching and integration of classroom technology are essential. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated ability to teach in a secondary area related to China studies such as the visual arts or culture. The ability to teach Japanese language (through tutorials) and/or comparative East-Asian topics in English would be welcome assets.
Specific responsibilities include teaching six courses annually at all levels of Chinese language, literature and culture to serve the Asian Studies major and minor, which include an optional concentration in Chinese language. Chinese language and literature faculty serve on the Asian Studies Program Committee, work with colleagues to develop cross-disciplinary Asia-focused classes, and support and promote the Lake Forest College Beijing Semester, as well as programs in East Asia, including the ACM-GCLA Waseda Program. In addition to teaching first and second year language courses, this faculty member will develop upper level courses in Chinese language, literature and culture with a view to expanding the Chinese and Asian Studies curriculum. The faculty member may also have the opportunity to develop courses in English for the Asian Studies Program or the college’s First-Year Studies Program. The salary for this position is competitive.
