Norton University - Oxfam Essay Contest for Cambodian Youth (aged 16-29 | $2,000 cash prize)

Oxfam is an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. Together with individuals and local groups in more than 90 countries, Oxfam saves lives, helps people overcome poverty, and fights for social justice.

The Essay Competition is open for all Cambodian youth aged 16-29. Enter to win a $2,000 cash prize and many more.

THE COMPETITION

In partnership with Norton University, Oxfam is pleased to announce a youth essay competition Voices of Young People on Governance of Extractive Industries. Entry essay must be based on a book entitled The Bottom Billion: Why the Poorest Countries are Failing and What Can Be Done About It. The book is available in Khmer and English at the National Library and most university libraries throughout Cambodia.

WRITE YOUR ESSAY BY ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS
  • Based on Professor Paul Collier’s book, The Bottom Billion, what factors contribute to the failing of states? Please elaborate.
  • Among those factors, what do you think are the greatest challenges for Cambodia? Do you agree with Professor Collier’s proposed solutions to the challenges? Please discuss by giving examples.
  • How do you think youth can best contribute to overcoming the challenges facing Cambodia?

HOW TO ENTER
  • Complete an entry form, which can be found at facebook.com/EssayComEi
  • Write an essay in English or Khmer that answers the three questions above
  • Submit your essay electronically (pdf only) to slok@oxfamamerica.og
  • Mail submission must be addressed to: #94, Russian Boulevard, Phnom Penh
  • Entries must be received by September 28th, 2012

RULES AND GUIDELINES
  • Open to all Cambodians aged 16 – 29
  • Maximum 3,500 words in English or 20 pages in Khmer
  • Essay must include a summary of 250 words or less
  • Must be typewritten, 1.5 line-spacing on A4-sized white paper
  • Name and contact details of the entrant shall be on the cover sheet
  • Must be original, unpublished and undistributed material
  • Must be the sole work of the entrant
  • Only 1 entry per person will be accepted
  • Entries will be judged by a panel selected by Oxfam
  • Decision of the panel shall be final
  • Prizes will be announced in October 2012
