All India Madanlal Khandelwal Memorial Braille Essay Competition (Rs. 10,000 top prize | India)

We are pleased to inform you that it has been decided that in order to popularize Braille further nationwide, we should organize an essay competition in Braille. With this end in view, we are organizing this essay competition in memory of Madanlal Khandelwal, an ardent supporter of the blind. The competition will be titled “All India Madanlal Khandelwal Memorial Braille Essay Competition” and will be held in different Indian languages and English from 2012 onwards. It will be a regular feature of our activities and shall carry attractive cash prizes. Many of you may be aware that Late Shri Madanlal Khandelwal based in London, was a reputed social worker and sponsored various Braille promotion programmes during his life time through this Organization. He also made a handsome donation of Rs. 20,00,000/- to this organization for Corpus Fund.

The detailed rules and procedure for the Contest are given below:

1. For the current year Braille essay competition shall be conducted in the following languages: English, Hindi, Tamil, Telgu, and Oriya. From next year onwards, it will be our endevaour to open the competition to a few other Indian languages as well in a phased manner.

2. There will be two groups of competitors—one Junior group up to the age of 25 years and the second Senior group from the age of above 25 years.

3. The participants can write on the following topics:
  • Junior group (Hindi): “Bhartiya Pariprekshya Me Drishtibadhiton Ke Liya Samaveshi Shiksha—Kitni Prasangik Kitni Safal?”
  • Junior group (English): “Inclusive education for the visually impaired in the Indian context—how relevant, how successful?
  • Senior group (Hindi): “Bharat Me Braille Ka Bhavishya—Chinotiyan Aur Sambhavnaen.”
  • Senior group (English): “Future of Braille in India—Challenges and Prospects”.

4. The essay should be written by the blind participants in one of the languages mentioned in this letter at serial No. 1 of the rules.

5. Essays should be written in uncontracted Braille in Indian languages. For English, the essays should be written in contracted Braille (grade-2).

6. Essays should be written by Braille slate or Braille typewriter/Perkins Brailler. In no case should the essays be entered on the computers and converted into Braille through a translation software.

7. Essays should be written on one side of the sheet only and each page number should be marked in continuation at the top right-hand corner.

8. Minimum length of the essay for junior group should be between 600-800 words and for senior group between 800-1000 words inclusive of applicant’s name, age, address phone No., topic of the essay. The essays not written as per the prescribed word limits shall not be included in the competition.

9. The Competition has certificates and three cash prizes of Rs. 10,000, 5,000 and 3,000 for junior as well as for senior group competitors in each language. Thus, in each language there shall be 6 cash prizes for the winners.

10. The essays must be completely original in nature.

11. The essays in each language shall be examined by reputed persons and their decision shall be final and binding for all.

12. For determining the best three entries in each language group the following shall be kept in mind:
  • Content
  • Language and style
  • Braille proficiency and neatness

13. Last date for receipt of essays in Braille in this office shall be 31st August, 2012.

14. On each envelope language of the essay and junior or senior group should be mentioned.
