The ICAS Book Prize (IBP) has been established by the International Convention of Asia Scholars in 2004. It aims to create an international focus for publications on Asia while increasing their worldwide visibility. The biennial ICAS Book Prize is awarded for outstanding English-language works in the field of Asia Studies. Also prizes will be awarded to the best dissertation in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. In 2007 the Colleagues' Choice Award was added. Votes can be cast online through the IBP Polling Booth from 1 April 2013.
1. Books on Asia in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences that are published between August 2010 and October 2012 are eligible.
2. Dissertations on Asia in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences defended between August 2010 and October 2012 are eligible.
3. Reference works, anthologies, fiction, poetry, travel books, autobiographies, memoirs, pamphlets, textbooks and exhibition catalogues are not eligible.
4. The IBP consists of five awards: (1) best study in the Humanities; (2) best study in the Social Sciences; (3) best dissertation in the Humanities; (4) best dissertation in the Social Sciences; and (5) Colleagues' Choice Award.
5. The Prize for the best study in the Humanities and Social Sciences consists of € 2,500 for each of the winning books (in case of multi-authored work the Prize will be equally shared).
6. The dissertation of the winners will be published in the ICAS Publications Series.
7. The Colleagues' Choice Award winner receives a ticket to the next ICAS.
8. The ICAS Secretariat administers the IBP. It is responsible for the formation of the Reading Committees. The Committees will, in the spirit of ICAS, ideally consist of representatives from Asia, Europe and the Americas. The ICAS CEO will act as secretary to the Reading Committees.
9. The Reading Committees will adhere to a jointly agreed set of principles in its decision making process. The decision of the Reading Committees is indisputable and irrevocable.
10. The next IBP will be awarded at ICAS 8.
11. Authors on the IBP short lists are encouraged to attend the ICAS 8 Awards Ceremony.
12. Nominations for the best study in the Humanities, the best study in the Social Sciences should be submitted by publishers (and not by the author).
13. Publishers should first submit the details of nominated books online. After the electronic submission has been checked, instructions for sending the hard copies will be send by email.
14. In total six copies of of the nominated book for the best study in the Humanities and Social Sciences should be sent by 15 October 2012. One copy should be send to each member of the Reading Committee (four members in total) and two copies to the ICAS Secretariat. Do note that submitted books will not be returned.
15. An electronic copy of the PhD dissertation in the Humanities and Social Sciences should be sent by 15 October 2012 to the ICAS Secretariat, email address icas@iias.nl.
16. The long lists will be published online and in The Newsletter of IIAS.
