For Young UK-Based Poets: Federation of Muslim Organisations Art and Poetry Competition (to raise awareness of Islamophobia)
Deadline: 29 June 2012

In order to commemorate and raise awareness of the tragic events that took place in the small town of Srebrenica, Bosnia*, Leicestershire County Council is working with the Federation of Muslim Organisations to hold an art and poetry competition with the opportunity for you to win a new Kindle Touch.

Enter the competition by producing an original piece of artwork or poetry that conveys your reflections on the event and raises awareness of Islamophobia. This could be a poster, a picture or both.

County entries can be posted to: Afsa Mitha – Room 300B, County Hall, Glenfield, LE3 8RA or take to your nearest County Library. City entries can be posted to: Luman Ali – Madani High School, 77 Evington Valley Road, Leicester, LE5 5LL.

Closing date for the competition is 29th June, 2012.

Competition is open to both city and county children up to the age of 18. Winning entries will be used as part of an exhibition that will be displayed in city and county venues.

Prizegiving will take place on 11th July, and the winner will be invited to attend to receive their prize.

* In the Bosnian silver-mining town of Srebrenica in July 1995, one of the most notorious modern acts of genocide took place. While the international community and U.N. peacekeepers looked on, Serb forces separated civilian men from women and killed thousands of men en masse, or hunted them down in the forests. More than 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were killed in the massacres.

The Srebrenica Massacre is an event that needs to be remembered, not least because it allows us to reflect on the spread of Islamophobia that is prevalent in our society today. This and other genocides (Holocaust, Rwanda) are events that allow us to reflect on the importance of humanity and standing side by side with our neighbours, whoever they may be to make our communities stronger and better places.
