The Eighth Annual 72 Hour Film Shootout will take place this summer under the auspices of and in collaboration with Asian CineVision. The Shootout is a worldwide competition in which filmmaking teams are given a common theme at the start and then have 72 hours to write, shoot, edit, and complete short films up to five minutes in length. Teams compete for cash, prizes and the chance to have their films screened at film festivals, both nationally and internationally. The competition creates a valuable opportunity for Asian American filmmakers to demonstrate their talent, gain exposure in the entertainment industry and impact the visibility of Asian American stories and characters in film. One of the Shootout requirements is that at least one key production member (e.g., director, producer or writer) and a principal actor from each team must be of Asian descent.
Judges include producer Teddy Zee, ABC Primetime Casting Director Marci Phillips and acclaimed cinematographer Eric Lin, among others.

STEP TWO – REGISTRATION (a.k.a PRE-PRODUCTION)
Register and pay your entry fee your team online. Get familiar with the film submission requirements by downloading and reading the Submissions documents. You’ll need to send us the Submission documents by Monday, June 18, 2012 before 8PM (EDT). The submission documents are in the Register section.
Although a majority of the work is restricted to the Competition Period, there is some prep work you are allowed to do. As stated in the Rules: “Only the following work can begin prior to the Competition Time Period: Organizing Crew, Organizing Cast, Securing Equipment, Scouting/Securing Locations.” We also recommend you prepare your releases and other submission forms during this time (Talent, Location, Music, etc.), fill out your Submission Documents including the Participants Agreement which all of your team members are required to sign. Don’t be rushing to Fed Ex with your submission in hand and then realize you didn’t get all the required signatures! All required submission documents can be found in the Registration section of this website.
STEP FOUR – (FIND OUT THIS YEAR’S THEME a.k.a. PRODUCTION)
On Friday, June 15th, 2012 at 8:00PM EDT, the THEME WILL BE ANNOUNCED from New York City at the Shootout Launch Party (Location TBD) and on www.aafilmlab.org! Let loose and have fun with fellow team members before the mayhem begins. It’s also your last opportunity to find the remaining members of your team: actors, editors, directors, camera persons, and crew.
From Friday, June 15, 2012, 8PM EST to Monday, June 18th, 2012, 8PM EST, you will putting your five minute film together, writing, directing your actors, editing it, and cleaning up the mess you made!
STEP FIVE – (Slate your Short a.k.a. POST-PRODUCTION)
Now that your film is finished, here’s how to prep it for us. Slate before your film: your team’s name, date, title, and running time.* At the beginning (or end!) of your film, you must include: “This film was made possible in part by the support of the 2012 72 Hour Film Shootout presented by the Asian American Film Lab and Asian Cinevision.”
* Please note that the above credits and slate do not count toward the time limit.
Video files should be in H.264 Quicktime format (NTSC Standard Definition or HD 720 or 1080, without proprietary codecs.); If you are sending your submission on mini-dv tape then your file should be 720×480 pixels DV NTSC, without proprietary codecs.) – No other tape format will be accepted! For High Definition 720 or 1080; Frame Rates: 24P (23.97) or 29.97fps – Digital file only – No HD format tapes will be accepted!
STEP SIX – SEND US YOUR FILM & TEAM SIGNATURES
Due to the volume of entries expected, you may only send your short to us one (uno) and only one way! If you send us more than one e-mail you will only make everything more complicated for us, our judges and your team! This year, we we can accept your short film three ways, please have your team leader decide on only one submission method:
(a) YouTube:
Upload your complete film to YouTube then fire up a new email:
Complete the your submission form with all required information, including team members information to shootout@aafilmlab.org. Make sure your team leader submits this information correctly.
(b) Online File Transfer Service:
Bundle your video and submissions documents via the web video services YouSendIt or WeTransfer.com:
(C) Old School Overnight Mail
All teams must send their Film and submission documents via US Postal Service, FedEx, DHL, Airborne or UPS delivered packages. It is HIGHLY recommended that teams use OVERNIGHT carrier. Filmmakers may opt to use non-overnight delivery services to save money, however this is done at their own risk.
INCLUDE
2 (two) Data DVDs (+R/-R) and/or USB Flashdrives of the finished film for overnight mail carrier. We will also need your Signed Submission Documents, which can be found in the Registration Section.

Important Notes Regarding Online/Old School Submissions:
MAIL must be postmarked Monday, June 18, 2012. All ONLINE SUBMISSIONS must be received by 8:00PM EDT / 5:00pm PDT on Monday, June 18, 2012. If we do not have your signed Submission Documents, we will not accept, judge, or screen a team’s submission, even if only one member fails to sign. NO DROP-OFFS (including messenger service) WILL BE ACCEPTED. Only works that are received by the above deadline via the aforementioned official mail carriers will be admitted into the competition.
STEP SEVEN – THE WAITING GAME
From June 19th – July 27th the Asian American Film Lab will sort through all entries and the judging process will commence. See Prizes section for more details.
