The John Glassco Prize recognizes excellence in literary translation and the talent and dedication of the next generation of literary translators. It is aimed at building greater awareness in the publishing world and in the general public by promoting a literary translator's first published work which demonstrates extraordinary talent and literary excellence.
Since 1982, The Literary Translators' Association of Canada has awarded a prize for a literary translator's first book-length literary translation into French or English, published in Canada during the previous year. Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and children's literature are eligible. The award consists of a $1000 prize and a one-year membership to the LTAC. It is awarded at the end of September during the celebration of St. Jerome, the patron saint of translators.
John Glassco, after whom the prize is named, was a well-known writer and translator who died in 1981. Among his works are translations into English of the poetry and journals of Saint-Denys Garneau.
Submission deadline is July 1st 2012.
GUIDELINES
The work submitted must be the translator's first published book-length translation.
The book must have been published between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012.
The book may be translated from any source language; however, the translation must be into French or English.
The competition is open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents only.
The deadline for receipt of the registration form and the books is July 1, 2012. The prize, and a cheque for $1000, will be awarded by the Literary Translators' Association of Canada in Montréal, during the celebration of International Translation Day (St. Jerome's Day) at the end of September 2012.
Works of fiction, non-fiction (including history and philosophy), poetry, drama, and children's literature—any books in the category of literature—are eligible. The translation may have been done by one translator or a team of translators working from the original book. Ineligible translations include manuals and how-to books, textbooks, dictionaries, glossaries, etc. The Glassco Prize Committee reserves the right to decide whether a title submitted is a literary work or not.
Eligible works may be submitted by a publisher or by someone other than the translator.
The submission must include FOUR copies (FIVE if the translation is from a book originally written in a language other than French or English), FOUR copy of the original (we will accept a photocopy of the manuscript if necessary) and the submission form, sent to the following address: LTAC-Glassco Prize Committee
