POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Tokyo bureau is looking for a highly talented and motivated journalist to fill the key position of head of company news in Japan. Japan is home to some of the world's largest and most well-known companies including Toyota, Sony, Nomura, Mitsubishi UFJ and Uniqlo. Superb coverage of these firms is a key component of Reuters offering to its clients worldwide. It is a crucial and exciting time for Japanese companies as they look to fend off South Korean and Chinese competition and expand further outside their sluggish home market. The strong yen is crimping profits but at the same time helping to fuel a boom in overseas M&A. The successful candidate will plan coverage and ensure the team of 12 reporters beats the competition on key timings and in breaking news. The person will know what makes a company tick, be able to spot trends quickly and help other team members generate and deliver on story ideas. He/she will actively leverage Thomson Reuters' data and embrace new ways of multi-media storytelling to deliver high-value content. They must be a self-starter and an effective communicator able to work well with the 9-strong Japanese language company news team, other asset classes, pictures and TV. Close cooperation with the counterpart on the Japanese language team in news planning and resource allocation will be a key focus in the role.
ESSENTIAL DAY-TO-DAY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage group of 12 reporters
- Identifying top stories and allocating stories and resources
- Coordinate with Asia EICs, Japanese language colleagues, Tokyo bureau chief and other asset classes in newsplanning.
- Build up high-level sources to help team break news and give direction on stories
- Subedit analyses and top stories to ensure they are of top quality
- Attract and develop top talent to raise level of team
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- A strong leader able to provide direction to a large team and coordinate coverage in line with global and regional priorities.
- Ability to read and speak Japanese fluently.
- Strong news judgement to make quick and effective coverage and resource decisions.
- At least 5 years experience as a financial journalist.
- Ability to write and edit stories to the sophisticated level required by Reuters global audience, delivering clean, clear copy despite very tight deadlines.
- Ability to identify and promote best practice to ensure Reuters wins timings.
- Ability to cultivate high-level sources within companies to break news.
- Track record of quickly spotting trends and delivering insightful analyses ahead of competition.
- Ability to work effectively with both Japanese service reporters and overseas colleagues.
- Experience covering company news is preferred but not essential.
