THEME

“Revitalizing the Australia-Japan Partnership in a Changing World”

Australia and Japan have long enjoyed favorable relations as complementary partners. Cooperative relations between the two countries cover a wide range of areas from economy to politics and national security, and they have evolved into a strategic partnership in the Asia-Pacific region.

Now, questions arise as to where we should go next in order to further expand and deepen relations built on a solid foundation of mutual trust fostered between the two countries. We welcome productive views and suggestions on future directions in Australia-Japan relations from various angles, including trade, economy, education, culture and diplomacy.

AWARDS

The first-place winner (JABCC Chairman's Prize) will receive JPY500,000.

The second-place winner (Awards Committee Chairman's Prize) will receive JPY200,000.
If resident in Japan, winners will also receive a return ticket between Japan and Sydney in addition to three nights' accommodation to attend the Award Ceremony and 50th Anniversary Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference, which will be held in Sydney in October 2012. If resident in Australia, winners will receive return Economy airfares from their nearest capital city to Sydney and three nights accommodation to attend the Award Ceremony and Conference as well as a return ticket from Sydney to Tokyo.

ELIGIBILITY

All businesspeople or students with an interest in Japan-Australia relations are eligible to enter the essay contest.

LANGUAGE/LENGTH

English (no more than 4,000 words) or Japanese (no more than 10,000 characters)

JUDGING

Entries will be judged on four criteria, namely:
  • Logical organisation
  • Creativity
  • Ability to convey message
  • Style

The materials passed to judges will preserve anonymity of the entrant. However, if for some reason an entrant became known to a judge, then that person will exclude himself from the evaluation of the entry.

ENTRIES

Downloading of the specified Entrant Data Sheet and the format sheet, then entrants are required to submit in the same email three documents in MS Word and PDF format:-

(1) Entrant's Data Sheet (Please note the Attestation at the base.)

(2) Essay Abstract (400 words in English or 800 characters in Japanese)

(3) The Entrant's Essay

The closing date for all entries is 23:59 hours Tokyo time on Thursday May 31, 2012. Entries will only be accepted if sent to jabcc2012@gmail.com. All contest entries will be acknowledged by the JABCC Secretariat.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
  • Essays must be type-written in the specified format sheets
  • The number of words in the essay shall not exceed 4,000 words in English or 10,000 characters in Japanese excluding titles of charts or tables, annotation and bibliography.
  • Each essay must be subtitled in addition to the essay theme “Revitalizing the Australia-Japan Partnership in a Changing World”
  • Each essay must be accompanied by an essay abstract of no more than 400 words in English or 800 Japanese characters in the specified format of A4 size.
  • Works already published elsewhere are not accepted.
  • Each participant must make a declaration that the entry is his or her own and unaided original work. Team entries are unacceptable.
  • Essays will not be returned to the applicants.
  • One essay entry permitted per contestant.
  • All primary and secondary sources quoted directly or indirectly or otherwise consulted in preparing the essay must be acknowledged using a citation system.
  • A bibliography must be included. Referencing such as footnotes and bibliography are NOT included in the 4,000 word limit.
  • If inserting charts or tables, essays must acknowledge the source in the footnote.
  • The award-winning essays shall become property of JABCC.
  • The Judges' decision will be final.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Winners of the essay contest will be announced on the occasion of the JABCC Annual General Meeting, which is to be held on September 25, 2012, and a press release will be issued. JABCC secretariat will notify Award-winners personally before the Annual General Meeting.

AWARD CEREMONY

The Award Ceremony will be held in Sydney in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference, which will take place during October 7-10, 2012. The Award-winners are requested to attend the Awards Ceremony.
